While it is never easy to say goodbye to a loved one, it can often be more accepting when we have the knowledge that the person was given such a long and wonderful time here on earth in this life.

I think part of the reason for this; beyond our understanding for all the science of life and death, is the fact that we are able to more easily fill the void left in our hearts brought on by their passing with the joy and happiness from the memories that we hold from their being.

So with that, I’d like to share with you some thoughts and memories of mine in the hope that it can help to fill the void left in all of our hearts so that together, we might that much sooner rejoice in the life of Stephanie Sciacca.

Stephanie Sciacca was my Grandmother –my Nonna, my Giuitta Bella.

She was a kind person and she was gentle in many ways. She was also tough. She had nice smile. She was smart, had a wonderful sense of humor and she was also attentive.

I have many fond memories of being with my Nonna. I remember how she could make my Nonno scream when ever she burnt the bread in the oven making toast. The funny thing is; I really have trouble remembering a time back then when she didn’t burn at least one round of it. –I think maybe she did it on purpose just to get a rise out of Nonno. Because the fact is, she was a great cook. I loved her chicken cutlets, her lentils with fava beans and the fruit and biscotti she used to always put out. I enjoyed drinking coffee with her and especially drinking wine. –She liked wine.

Nonna was the quintessential grandmother. She loved children. I remember as a child being with my cousins and having her cover for us by saying that we were going to the playground near her house while she slipped a few dollars in our pockets so that we could then sneak off to the Fells market for candy.

She always had a stash of candy somewhere in the house and as a kid I remember the searches we often had trying find the stash. Funny thing is she often forgot where it was too! But don’t worry, if there was any left I’m sure either or Maria or Frank have found it by now!

I remember when I was 14 and I worked at Roche Bros. I was going to my first work Christmas Party and I wanted to look sharp. Nonna caught wind of it and decided to accompany me on the shopping trip. I can remember her slipping me some additional money because she wanted me to have the best. Nonna loved “The Best”.

She loved things that sparkled. She loved shinny things and pure white. She loved beautiful flowers and fine fabric, good food and beautiful people. Especially the beauty of children, with all their innocence and untarnished perfection. I will always remember the joy in her eyes when she saw a child.

So now that she is gone from this life I take with me these memories and I share them with you. I trust that you too have memories of her and ask you that reflect on them. Think of the joy and happiness of life and I hope that it will help to fill your void.

And lastly, when the lord decides, in all his great wisdom, that it is finally your time to leave this earth, I ask that you not get nervous should you smell smoke and perhaps hear a few screams; It’s not what you might think. You very well may be in heaven; it’s probably just Nonna making some toast.

I love you Nonna and may God bless you.

-Michael
