Mary Lansdowne Obituary

Mary Agnes Lansdowne
February 23, 1915 ~ August 3, 2015
Carmel

Mary Agnes Lansdowne passed away at the age of 100, on August 3, 2015. A popular artist on the Monterey Peninsula, Mrs. Lansdowne was best known for her floral and seascape oil paintings, and for her pencil sketches of historical buildings and nature scenes. She was born in Portland, Oregon on February 23, 1915. She studied with Millard Sheets at Scripps College, attended the California School of Fine Arts, and graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in Interior Design. Mrs. Lansdowne was a lifetime member of the Carmel Art Association, and had been since 1941. She enjoyed the beauty of the Monterey Peninsula—its beaches, trees, mountains, and sky—and expressed that beauty through her artwork. For many years, her notecards and prints were sold in various stores on the Monterey Peninsula.

Mrs. Lansdowne was a member of the Casa Abrego Club in Monterey, Colonial Dames, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was the mother of Zack Lansdowne, grandmother of Frances Lansdowne, mother-in-law of Nan Lansdowne, beloved aunt of Kathy Murphy, Mary Ingals, C. Lansdowne Hunt, Betsy Hunt, Robyn Hunt, Patricia Hunt, Julia Hunt, Michael Murphy, Molly Murphy, Jodi Murphy and several other great-nieces and great-nephews. Mary Agnes' husband, Captain MacKinnon ("Mack") Lansdowne, predeceased her.

Mrs. Lansdowne was a longtime resident of the Carmel Valley Manor. A memorial service will be held in the Hillcrest Living Room at the Carmel Valley Manor, 8545 Carmel Valley Road, Carmel, on Saturday, August 22 at 3:30 p.m.

I met Mary Agnes as a patient when I was stationed at Fort Ord Army Community Hospital. We remained good friends till a few years ago when she couldn't drive down to Hollister to see me. We would meet once every six months for her eye examination, go out for lunch and catch up on news, exchange gifts and talk for hours. She was not merely a patient - she was a sister I never had , a friend who instinctively knew when I was hurt, always there for me when I needed her. I could write a book on Mary Agnes. When I I first started out in practice she decorated my Eye Clinic with antiques we hunted around Carmel and Fisherman wharf. It looked more like a sitting room than a Doctor's Office Reception. She was the nicest friend, a self declared grandmother to my kids, I have the post cards of her sketches she made for me to send as Thank you cards to my patients. My son has two of her oil paintings ( she mostly did pencil lithographs ) which were her earlier ,attempts with oils on canvas. She did all the flower decorations and my daughter's wedding Bouquet. It was a bonanza of flowers in most artistic displays that the guests remember to this day. She was an artist in every sense. I miss my friend - I would like to keep in touch with her family and friends- she was very proud of her grand daughter, was thrilled when her son moved back to Carmel with his family. I would love to share my memories and the cards of Mary Agnes with all of you. May she Rest in Peace.

Yes, I have, too, enjoyed these exchanges. I have printed out the information from Ms. Lansdowne's guest book and attached it to the back of my print for the sake of provenance.

I love the Monterey Peninsula and, in particular, Carmel and the beautiful Monterey cypress trees that abound in that area.

As I mentioned below, I purchased my Cypress sketch for $12 at an animal benefit shop in Pacific Grove back in 2009. I came upon Mary's obituary by chance when I decided on 12/1/15 to look more closely at the spelling of her last name and realized it was "Lansdowne" not "Lanseburne." I have enjoyed connecting with others that have collected Mary's artwork, and I think she would be touched that we have connected through her art!

Thank you JDC for telling me about your lone Cypress print. It must have been a favorite of her's to sketch.

Hopefully, Mary's friends and family members are enjoying reading our entries and knowing we appreciate her beautiful artwork.

Hi Kimberely, the print I have of the Lone Cypress is identical in every way as yours. There's a gold label on the back of the print, pertaining to Ms. Lansdowne's work, but nothing else . I wish I had more of her art and have kept an eye out for it from time to time. I've sketched here and there myself and find her work very inspirational. We shall both continue to enjoy our prints with smiles... JDC

JDC, I am wondering if you would scan your cypress and post it here so we can see more of Mary's beautiful work.

My "Lone Cypress" sketch is posted below. It is one of my favorite pieces.

I'm sorry to learn of Mary's passing. She was very talented and heartfelt in her life. During the summer of 1986 I came across her Carmel cypress print In a plane portrait frame at a garage sale in San Jose. I purchased it for $1.00 and I still have it in its original condition and frame hanging in my home. I truly love this piece as it has sense of peace and character of the artist. RIP Mary - your legendary life will
Live on thru your art... JDC

While sorting out donated items to sell for an annual benefit in my Vermont town, I came across two framed sketches of
M.Lansdowne in need of some TLC. Today I took them apart and found her "bio"and the insert titled "The Artist's Notes". I learned her full name, which lead me to this obituary. I purchased them, as is, reframed them,
adding her obituary with the "bio" and "The Artist's Notes". One is a little boy and his boat on a string looking out into the ocean, titled, "On the beach, Carmel, Calif" and the other is fishing boats, titled "Monterey Bay". These sketches will hang on the wall of my winter home in Cape Cod, MA along with photographs I've taken of California sea birds. In "The Artist's Notes" she says, "It is my sincere hope that these drawings will recall a measure of the enchantment that so aptly describes the Monterey Peninsula". They most certainly have.
My condolences to the family and friends-- what a gift to have known and loved her.

I purchased a beautiful sketch entitled "The Lone Cypress, Carmel, Calif" by Mary Agnes Lansdowne in a Pacific Grove animal benefit shop back in 2010. I was trying to learn about the artist, but mistakenly thought her last name was spelled "Lanseburne." Then, just today (12/1/15), I looked a little more closely at the name and realized the "eb" was a "d." That is when I discovered the obituary for Ms. Lansdowne.

I wanted to send my condolences and let her family and friends know that this sketch is one of my favorite pieces of art, and I have it hanging in my home in Arcata, CA.

Kind regards,

She meant the world to my grandmother Alice, her best friend. Because of this friendship my sister and I were able to experience her love and kindness first hand when visiting Carmel from the East Coast. Fond memories of my first salmon steaks on the BBQ. I think of that time whenever I see a steak cut of salmon. Oh so mouth watering. Thanks Mary Agnes for the memories of past and for those that will live on for many more years.

She was my Godmother, and she was the best there is. I will miss most - her emotional strength, her kindness and consideration for others, her extremely positive outlook in life. Most of all, I will miss the love and care she always gave to me.
