Gene Elmore Obituary

Gene Elmore
September 6, 1927 ~ September 22, 2015
Pacific Grove, CA
Beloved Carmel and Pacific Grove artist Gene Elmore died on Sept. 22 after a brief illness. He was 88. Gene was born in Finlay, Ohio, studied pre-med in college, and was an Army and Navy veteran of WWII. After the war Gene came to California where he discovered his true calling and passion for art. In 1958, The Monterey Jazz Festival offered a statewide contest for artists to coincide with its nascence; the winning entry was Gene's painting of a trumpet on a chair, the now iconic image replicated in various ways by many artists over more than 50 years.
But Gene will be best remembered for his kindness, compassion, and wit. He was beloved by all who knew him. Gene is survived by a sister, Joan Buehler, and several nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be held Nov. 8 from 1:00-3:00pm at 217 19th St., Pacific Grove. For more information, call 884-5850. Donations in his name can be made to Meals on Wheels.

A friend for 30 years - rare to find a person so consistently kind, generous and non-judgemental. He lived in a small PG house that was full of mementos from his active well-traveled life. In the midst of a conversation he would go to a certain drawer and pull out just the right item to complement the discussion - whether a recipe, photo, or souvenir - he knew where the memories of his life were safely kept and shared them. Telling a joke was one of his many joys. When conversation turned to events of an unpleasant nature such as crime or natural disaster, Gene knew when it was time to move to a lighter topic by saying "I'm just going to crawl under my bed and stay there..." But of course he didn't crawl under the bed, he was always in touch with the past and the present and took a keen interest in the life of his diverse friends. Gene hosted many gatherings in his comfortable home and his diverse friends enjoyed a good exchange of ideas - with Gene as the glue to bring us together. We are so lucky to know him and to have the legacy of his art to keep his memory alive.
