Katherine Lichty Obituary

Katherine Lichty 91, passed on with grace and dignity at Milford Manor, East Stroudsburg, PA, on January 24, 2012. A Bucks County artist proficient in a number of medium, she entered the field of art both because she had passion for art and she "liked her father's artist friends." She attended Pratt Institute where she met her husband, Girard Lichty. She had resided on her beloved historical farm in West Rockhill Township, PA for over 40 years until the passing of her dedicated husband in 1996. She moved to the Poconos to join her son and his family. She is survived by her son, Mark, and his wife, Wendy, of East Stroudsburg, and her daughter, Wemara Lichty, of Stroudsburg, PA and four grandchildren, Daniel, Adam, Christian, and Lotus. Katherine (Kay) Lichty was a gifted artist, art teacher, and a creative spirit. Her inspiration was her father, Otto L. Grever, who was a noted stone lithographer. At the age of 65, after having won numerous awards as an artist in a variety of medium, Kay took up the complex process of stone lithography. She won awards for her work in the medium including one given by the Katherine Lorilard Wolfe Art Club of NYC. In addition to being an enthusiastic fine artist, she adored imparting her joy about seeing the world with an artist's eye when teaching art to others. Not only was she an artist, but she was an activist working in many ways to improve the lot of society. Her most recent cause was to work to get Pennsylvania to pass print disclosure legislation requiring notice to the public so that they would not be misled when purchasing nonoriginal offset reproductions. She was progressive in her actions and influenced her family with stories of activist ancestors who helped slaves escape on the underground railroad. Later in life she was proud to call herself a member of the "Greeeeen" Party, drawing out the word Green for emphasis. Her creative spirit also showed in her glorious gardens at the farm. She welcomed all who came from every walk of life. Her humor, laughter, and creative spirit will be deeply missed, but will be a part of us always. There will be a memorial service at the Unitarian Church, 920 Ann St. Stroudsburg on Saturday, February 25 at 11 AM. It will be largely participatory, so please bring your humor and your stories as that is what she would wish. Any donations should be sent to the Philadelphia Sketch Club, 235 Camac St. Phila, PA 19107, or the Deep Run Presbyterian Church, 16 Irish Meeting House Rd., Perkasie , PA 18944 .

hi...My mother Catharine Kinter, wife of Chuck Kinter, was a friend of Kay's. I think I met Kay only once, but remember her as a free spirit, for sure. While working at the Western Center for Technical Studies in Limerick, PA, I saw one of her paintings hanging in the office and learned that she had taught there at one time. I had thought of looking her up and now am sorry I didn't do it--I can't believe I missed her by a few months. Please accept my condolences.
