Jarrold Ayers Obituary

Jarrold Ennis Ayers, 69, of Pittsburg, KS passed away on December 27, 2014 at his home from complications due to Parkinson?s Plus Syndrome. He fought this aggressive disease courageously and never complained.

Jarrold was born on April 9, 1945 in Wichita, KS to Russell and Ruth (Peddecord) Ayers. He was raised in Winfield, KS and was a 1963 graduate of Winfield High School. He married Judy Clarke in 1963 and had son James Clarke Ayers in 1964. After the divorce, he enlisted in the Army from 1968 to 1971 and served in the Vietnam War.

Jarrold attended PSU from 1971 to 1975 with a BS in Parks and Recreation Administration. He was a member and President of Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity.

Jarrold married Carol Ann Gooley June 3, 1976. He was a ski resort condominium administrator in Dillon and Durango, CO. He and Carol returned to Pittsburg and opened the Old Frisco Cantina Mexican Restaurant in 1984. Employees nicknamed him ?Señor? and he gave them invaluable life lessons. The Cantina crews became a second family and formed lifelong friendships.

After selling that business, they opened the Pitt Discount Liquor store in Pittsburg from 1995 until he retired in 2006.

Jarrold was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, VFW, and American Legion.

Jarrold is survived by his wife Carol of the home; sisters Janice Hanna (husband Martin), and Jackie Kadane of Hot Springs Village, AR; sister Jane Lynn Parr (husband John) of Overland Park, KS; son James Ayers (wife Melissa) and granddaughters Olivia and Paige of Denver, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jarrold will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was a fun loving character with many outrageous ?Señorisms?. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the OU Sooner and PSU Gorilla football teams, and attended many Big 12 Basketball tournaments. Jarrold is enjoying a cold beezo in heaven right now!

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday (January 3) at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, KS, with Father Michael Baldwin as celebrant. Inurnment will be at the National Cemetery in Ft. Scott, KS, at a later date.

The parish rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Brenner Mortuary in Pittsburg where the family will receive friends following the rosary until 8:00 p.m.

The family suggests memorials to the S.E.K. Humane Society, Southern Care Hospice, or the Parkinson?s Foundation. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762. Online condolences may also be left at www.brennermortuary.com.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg, KS.

I recently requested and received all my military records. Going through the documents I spotted Jarrold on the same manifest of order (Army) 6 September 1968 as my own name. I paused to reflect as I remember first meeting Jarrold as both of us used the delayed entry program from May, 1968 and were sent to Fort Campbell Ky for basic training. Both being from Kansas, me McPherson, he from Winfield, we connected quickly. He was somewhat older than me (me, 1949) and we connected well and enjoyed each others company. We both ended up in Vietnam and wrote a few letters back and forth. I always meant to look him up when I got back to Kansas but don't remember if we made contact. He was a high energy, good spirited guy and we shared a love of life, laughing and joking along the way. Here's to ya buddy, even if I'm late, you are in my memory book of "memorable" people and it is with great fondness I can flash back on the time we spent together and the friendship we developed.

One heck of a guy, loved to visit with him and Carol "over the fence" and share a toddy when we had time. Will always miss his good nature, and he is forever in my heart.

May the God of all comfort strengthen the entire family during this time of sorrow. Those who die God keeps in his memory because they are precious in his eyes. (Psalms 116:15) My sincerest sympathy.
