Sheryl Nichols Obituary

Sheryl Cara Lanman Nichols

AGE: 34 • Robbinsville

Sheryl Cara Lanman Nichols, 34, a courageous, compassionate and luminescent woman, died of breast cancer Aug. 18, surrounded by her loving husband and family at home in Robbinsville. Born in New Brunswick, Sheryl grew up in East Brunswick and graduated from East Brunswick High School. She earned her bachelor's degree in psychology at Rutgers College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and spent a semester studying in Valencia, Spain. Sheryl's compassion and concern for others led her to volunteer with the student counseling hotline, answering calls and training new volunteers. As an undergraduate, she began her career in the domestic violence field, working weekends at Women Aware's shelter for victims of domestic violence. After graduation, she remained there as a counselor, also helping facilitate support groups for Latina women. She traveled twice with Habitat for Humanity to build homes in the Dominican Republic and volunteered with the Domestic Violence Response Team in New Brunswick. In 2008, she returned to Rutgers for her master's degree at the School of Social Work. There, she worked on research projects for the Center on Violence Against Women and Children, After graduating in 2010, she became a bilingual social worker at Womanspace, Inc., in Lawrenceville, where she was devoted to helping her clients remain safe and heal from trauma.

In 2009, Sheryl met Justin Nichols, the love of her life, who would remain steadfastly by her side throughout the challenges to come. They were married Oct. 13, 2012, a month after her diagnosis. Throughout her illness, she remained an optimist, rebounding from several dire prognoses to enjoy life to the fullest despite the toll it took on her body. She confronted her disease with grace, wit and courage. Sheryl's luminous smile and warm, engaging personality captivated everyone; her circle of friends grew exponentially wherever she went. She loved animals, especially her and Justin's cats, Samantha, Sadie and Sarge, and their adored rescue dog, Jackson. She, Justin and even Jackson were committed vegans. Sheryl also was an expert cook, who delighted in sharing her vegan dishes. She was a regular at the Breast Cancer Resource Center in Princeton and participated in many groups, such as the Young Survival Coalition. She was an empathetic friend to other young breast cancer survivors and advocated for genetic testing for all women for the BRCA mutations. In addition to her beloved husband, Sheryl is survived by her parents, Steven and Sandra Lanman of East Brunswick; brother Scott Lanman of Rockville, Md.; grandmother, Stella Sloan of Galloway; grandfather Ludwig Hahn of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; an aunt, uncle, nieces, and cousins. She was the granddaughter of the late Marion Hahn and Robert S. Lanman.

Services were held Friday, Aug. 21 at Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple, New Brunswick, officiated by Rabbi Bennett Miller. Burial was in Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge. Shiva will be observed at the family home in East Brunswick through Wednesday evening. Arrangements were under the direction of the Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, 239 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sheryl Lanman Nichols Memorial Scholarship Fund to support a graduate student at the Rutgers School of Social Work planning to work in the domestic violence field. I am so very sorry to hear of Sheyl's passing. I met her in college where she trained me for the peer counseling hotline. She was a truly joyful person with a beautiful heart. I have no doubt of all the brightness she shone into the world around her. I am sure she is still shining down on us now.

Sheryl was so brave in facing this deadly disease and handled it with courage and grace. Sandy and Steve, I hope you find some comfort in all she did for so many as a social worker and with victims of domestic violence. I continue to hold you both and Justin in the light. With love, Janet

Cheryl was my sister's close friend from graduate school whom I've always liked and admired - especially for the exceptional kindness she radiated. I was crushed to learn the news. This disease is brutal and devastating beyond words. I am so, so sorry for everyone involved.

Sheryl once said that if she died she didn't want people to say that she lost her battle with cancer. Those words are now clear to me for cancer never crippled her love of life. It never silenced her courage. It never suppressed her humor. Nor can it take away our memories of the most amazing person that one will ever meet. Cancer took her body but not her spirit which will be with us always.

I have such wonderful memories of Sheryl coming to my house for dinners and game nights, sitting at my table or by the pool laughing. These are the moment I will cherish. Her smile lit up the room. And she was still smiling like a beacon when I saw her a few months ago. Sheryl is the very definition of dignity and grace.

And in the end...the love you take is equal to the love you make. Sheryl made and gave the world a lot of love: the best legacy of all.

I wish I'd met Sheryl under different circumstances, but I am so grateful to have met her nonetheless. I worked as a nurse on 5N at RWJUH.

She was and is such a bright soul and we shared many interesting conversations together. I am sorry to hear that she has passed, my prayers are with her family and friends. She truly made an impression on me, as I'm sure she has on others.

May you rest peacefully,

Call me one of the hundreds who was utterly beguiled by Sheryl's aura of wit, irony, and sheer will. An extraordinary human being who had already done good deeds for many, she no doubt would have done many more. Her memory will inspire all of us to do them for her. I was honored to know her. My heart breaks for Justin and their family of furry ones, for her parents Sandy and Steve, and for her brother Scott with wife Rachel and their two daughters, Sheryl's beloved nieces, Leah and Naomi. Your worlds are forever changed. Heaven, of course, has gained its brightest shining angel. Rest in peace, Sheryl!

Although I only met Sheryl at one of the Advanced Breast Cancer support meetings in Elsje's home..she sat in between Karen and I on the sofa..and I always remembered her because I was just so worried for her..I saw her again at my oncology office getting a massage..she messaged me on Facebook and we became facebook friends..we even spoke on the phone and she was still trying to help people even in her weakened state..I am forever changed by knowing her and because of her I am going to live my life the way I want to live it..be free Sheryl..until we meet again..

Dear Justin, Jackson, Sandy, and Steven. My heart breaks for each of you. While I only met Sheryl once, I have felt her presence and courage for some time through Sandy. I pray that God will heal your heavy hearts during this time of mourning. I know you will always celebrate the wonderful life that Sheryl lived. May she rest in peace.

To the Nichols, Lanman and Sloan Familiy,
I do not know why I even read this obituary, it was probably the very young age of the deceased. As I read further I realized what a remarkable young women she was with so much accomplished in a short life and what so much more could have been. As I read her survivors I realized who everyone was. I worked with Stella in the cosmetic department of Stern's Department Stores in the 1990's. We were great friends. I even remember coming to a formal family celebration as a guest of Stella's possibly a Bar Mitzvah. I remember meeting you Steven were you said to me "Thank You for being a good friend to my Mother". Please know that my heart breaks for each and everyone of you. And you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Very Sincerely,
Patty Ferreri

I feel so honored to have met and known Sheryl. She had an amazing smile and a light that surrounded her and it was infectious for others as well. I regret not being able to spend more time with her. What amazing accomplishments for someone so young. She had such tremendous gifts to give the world and everyone she met, and therein lies the true sadness....why was she taken from us so soon? But her spirit and positivity will live on through all of us whose lives she touched. I wish peace for Sheryl and comfort for Justin and her family. She accomplished more than most people and touched more lives than most do in one lifetime. I would have loved to see the subsequent movements of her symphony, but sadly, we are left with the already tremendous gifts she gave us. Let us all keep her spirit with us and remember how precious life is - this, I truly believe it what Sheryl would have wanted for each and every one of us - that we embrace life and live it to the fullest of our ability.
