Mary Cain Obituary

Mary Grace Lyon Cain
January 11, 2021
Raleigh, North Carolina - Pardon me Roy, is that the cat who chewed your new shoes? Chess nuts boasting in an open foyer. Never stow thrones in glass houses. Those are just a few punch lines from Mary Grace's favorite jokes.
On January 11, 2021 Mary Grace Lyon Cain died in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Her journey began January 9, 1939 in Durham, North Carolina. A textile brat, her family also lived in Scottsdale and Columbus (Georgia), Rhodhiss, Lincolnton, Belmont, and eventually settling in Wake Forest where she graduated high school and was crowned Miss Wake Forest High. She moved on to Greensboro College and then Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth) to study Commercial Art. It is there she met Alston Cain. Marriage followed and so did two sons, Jac and Shannon. The Cains settled in Fayetteville, NC where Mary Grace continued to cultivate her dry wit, master crossword puzzles, involve herself in the theatre and take on anyone in a rousing game of Scrabble. Al and MG eventually formed Cain & Cain Advertising. She forged many enduring personal and professional friendships during her years in Fayetteville.
Retiring in Cherry Grove Beach, South Carolina Mary Grace cultivated even more friendships in the Shag community, the Sea Shells and St. Stephens Episcopal Church. She enjoyed painting, and her fur babies Webster (Siamese), Tilley (Jack Russell) and Sissy (Long Hair Miscellaneous) were some of her favorite subjects. She eventually moved to Raleigh to be closer to family.
Mary Grace was predeceased by her parents Herbert Grady Lyon and Lucille Dailey Lyon and her husband Alston Grey Cain. She will be missed very much, especially by her family. Brothers John D. Lyon (Barbara), Bert Lyon (Diane) and sister Laura Damich (Carl), sons Jac (Lutie) and Shannon (Carol), and granddaughter Emma. Nieces and nephews Johnny, Beth, Lyon, Chris, Sean and Christy and their spouses and children.
A private committal service will be held in Cherry Grove Beach. In lieu of flowers please make donations to your local Food Bank.

Goodbye to a wonderful friend with shared memories in Fayetteville and Cherry Grove and even Manteo, NC where MG visited more than once. She was just the most fun. The Reavis family will always be grateful for her loving care of our Queen of Shag, Clarice Reavis.

My thoughts are with Jac, Shannon and their families. May she live on in our hearts forever. Her humor and good sense will come in handy.
