Alan Appelbaum was a thoughtful and kind man, as well as an accomplished one. I was just preparing to write him a note thanking him for a generous donation made last year to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Buckeye, Iowa, in my father's memory when I saw this obituary. He and my father, Charles Lettow, were partners together at Cleary Gottlieb. I am an academic, and Mr. Appelbaum's scholarly record during his second career is an inspiration.
