It was a shock hearing of Alan's death. Distance did not diminish bonds forged in London in 1986 when we had the most intense though satisfying academic experience of our life, the MSc in Demography at LSE. We were a bunch of people mostly foreigners turned students. Course work and Saturday evenings pub crawling forged an unforgettable shared memory. Alan was a genuine, kind person with great humor... he would recount people's raised eyebrows seeing him on the Underground reading UN...
