February 25, 1944 - April 29, 2025
Sacramento, California - Alan "Al" Avila passed away on April 29, 2025, in Sacramento, CA after a brief illness.
Born February 25, 1944 to Alfred and Marion Avila, he leaves behind his partner Sharon Doughty, sister Sue Keller, brother Stan, and a large extended family.
A funeral will be held May 21 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Ignatius Loyola, Sacramento.
Al will be deeply missed.

It was a shock hearing of Alan's death. Distance did not diminish bonds forged in London in 1986 when we had the most intense though satisfying academic experience of our life, the MSc in Demography at LSE. We were a bunch of people mostly foreigners turned students. Course work and Saturday evenings pub crawling forged an unforgettable shared memory. Alan was a genuine, kind person with great humor... he would recount people's raised eyebrows seeing him on the Underground reading UN Population reports on Breastfeeding in the Philippines and such like. We kept in touch when he and Sharon came to Europe and visited London, Paris, Spain or the Basque Country and when we went to see him in Sacramento. He was part of our common experience and will be missed. From here we wish you Sharon, and the family, condolences. Begoña Arregi, and Gwen.
