ALAN COHN Obituary

COHN--Alan David, 84.

Alan D. Cohn passed away after a brief illness on November 17, 2014, in New York City. Born in Paterson, NJ on October 31, 1930 to Bertha and David Cohn, he graduated from Harvard College in 1951 and earned an MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1953. After receiving his MBA, he joined Wertheim & Co. where he worked for many years, becoming a managing director. Alan remained with the firm when it merged to become Wertheim Schroder, and again when Wertheim Schroder merged with Smith Barney, and when Smith Barney merged with Morgan Stanley. He was working as Senior Vice President at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney at the time of his death. An accomplished pianist, Alan was a lifelong enthusiast of jazz. A founding member and Treasurer of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Finance Committee, Alan helped to establish and sustain Jazz at Lincoln Center, receiving an award in honor of his exemplary leadership at its 25th anniversary celebration in 2012. Alan was also a founding member of the Board of Directors and member of the Investment Committee of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. With his loving wife Betsy, Alan was generous in his support of the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, and many Democratic candidates for public office. For more than 50 years, he served as a Director of the Jewish Foundation for Education of Women. Alan is survived by his adoring wife, Betsy L. Cohn. He is also survived by his devoted brother George L. Cohn. He was predeceased by his loving first wife, Nancy D. Cohn. He was a loving father to daughter Deborah A. Cohn and her wife Charlotte J. Patterson, daughter Susan E. Cohn and her husband Jonathan D. Klein, and an adoring grandfather to Daniel and Amanda Klein, and Sarah, Elizabeth and David Cohn. Friends may call Wednesday, 5:30-7:30pm, at Frank E. Campbell, 1076 Madison Avenue (at 81st St.). Services will be at 11am on Thursday, November 20th, at Temple Emanu-El, Fifth Avenue at 65th St. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Jazz at Lincoln Center or to Harvard College.

A light went out when Alan Cohn left his family, friends, and colleagues. He touched and will be missed by many. He was such a generous person with a zest for life. I will always cherish the times I spent visiting Debbie when we all chatted, laughed, and shared our appreciation of music!

Alan Cohn and my boss were great friends and I think I spoke to Alan at least once every weekday for almost 20 years when he called in to speak to my boss. He was always kind and we shared many a laugh in the minute or two that we spoke. I do not know him as deeply as others but I know he will be greatly missed and he was a wonderful person.

Alan was a consummate professional and a gentleman. As a relatively younger investor, he was a patient and thoughtful peer as we shared investment ideas and observations on both current and historical events. I always appreciated his wisdom and his presence will be greatly missed.
