I always had a crush on him.

Harv was my music teacher at Piedmont Jr. High and Sr. High. I was a flute player for 4 years before I met him his first year at PHS when I was in 8th grade. He truly inspired me in numerous ways. After graduation from PHS, I went on to a music conservatory and I became a music teacher. Music has always been an important aspect of my life, and I have quoted him, with credit, on numerous occasions! We had a chance to catch up a bit about each other's lives last fall through a mutual...

How shocked I was to hear of Alan's passing. He was a dear friend and colleague at Foothill for many years. His dedication to the Fine Arts faculty, the college in general, and its administrators was truly admirable. His devotion to music and performance remarkable. He leaves a giant legacy and he will be missed greatly.

Harv inordinately affected my life during and after high school (though when I declared a music major, he jokingly assured my mom that it wasn’t his fault). Harv took me from accompanying G&S and the musical my freshman year, to playing harpsichord for Handel’s Messiah, to letting me play Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the school orchestra my senior year. Music has since been my vocation (combined with various “day jobs”).

Alan was a great colleague and mentor, a wonderful friend, and has been taken from us far too early.
