Alan Lee

HARVEY

Alan Lee Harvey passed away suddenly on January 27, 2009. Alan grew up in Oakland, California, the son of Jessie Mae Sojourner and Donald T. Harvey.

After graduating from Oakland High School, he attended San Francisco State University receiving his Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in music and a minor in Spanish. Alan spent two years teaching music at Oceana High School in Pacifica, CA. He then took a position across the Bay in the Piedmont Unified School District teaching both vocal music, instrumental music, Advanced Placement Theory and Harmony and Drama at Piedmont High School. Alan produced many magnificent stage productions ranging from Gilbert and Sullivan to Broadway musicals as well as works such as “The Messiah“ and “The Creation.“ The many students that were part of his program during these years value his unique contribution to their education and love of music. The Theatre at Piedmont High School was named “Alan L. Harvey Theatre“ in his honor and in recognition of his great impact on music education.

After 19 years in Piedmont, Alan assumed a new career path as Executive General Director of the renewed “Lamplighters“ in San Francisco. After three years at Lamplighters, be accepted a position at Foothill College in Los Altos. He was the Executive Director of the Festival of the Arts, the Performing Arts Alliance and a professor of music and drama. He soon was promoted to the position of Dean of the Fine Arts and Communications Division. Alan spent his last six years at Foothill College as Vice President of Education Resources and Instruction.

After retiring, Alan moved to Gardnerville. His life has been very busy and productive and brimming with music since moving to Nevada. He was a former member of the Carson Valley Pops and a current violist and flutist with the Carson Valley Symphony as well as a member of the Washoe Valley Woodwind Quintet and the Toccata Choir. This year he accepted the position of instrumental and vocal music teacher at Incline High School.

He is survived by his brother, Don Harvey and his sister- in-law, Barbara Harvey of Fallon, Nevada. His answering machine also states that you may leave a message for either Alan or Lily. Lily is his beloved canine companion.

Alan has touched and changed many lives throughout the years. He will be missed terribly by his family, his many friends and his students. The students at Incline High School will be presenting a Memorial Concert conducted by David Branson, Music Specialist for the Washoe County School District on February 11, 2009 at 1 p.m. in the High School gym. I always had a crush on him.

Harv was my music teacher at Piedmont Jr. High and Sr. High. I was a flute player for 4 years before I met him his first year at PHS when I was in 8th grade. He truly inspired me in numerous ways. After graduation from PHS, I went on to a music conservatory and I became a music teacher. Music has always been an important aspect of my life, and I have quoted him, with credit, on numerous occasions! We had a chance to catch up a bit about each other's lives last fall through a mutual friend. My grown sons are also musicians and have heard about Harv throughout their lives. His legacy will truly live on.

How shocked I was to hear of Alan's passing. He was a dear friend and colleague at Foothill for many years. His dedication to the Fine Arts faculty, the college in general, and its administrators was truly admirable. His devotion to music and performance remarkable. He leaves a giant legacy and he will be missed greatly.

Harv inordinately affected my life during and after high school (though when I declared a music major, he jokingly assured my mom that it wasn’t his fault). Harv took me from accompanying G&S and the musical my freshman year, to playing harpsichord for Handel’s Messiah, to letting me play Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the school orchestra my senior year. Music has since been my vocation (combined with various “day jobs”).

I last saw Harv when he was in the administration at Foothill College (I was in the pit for a show at Smithwick Theater). I regret that I will no longer get to see Harv, and I will miss him a *lot*.

Alan was a great colleague and mentor, a wonderful friend, and has been taken from us far too early.
