He had a twinkle in his eye and a great sense of humor. When I found out he enjoyed chess, I started bringing him a chess joke every week. He was unfailingly honest in his reactions. The Metrowest Chess Club will miss our longtime friend Alan. May his family find comfort knowing that he is beyond physical hurt.

"Grant unto him eternal rest, and let perpetual light shine upon him."

On behalf of the Massachusetts Chess Association, of which Al was a member for many years when he lived in the Bay State, I extend deep condolences to the Schaefer family. Al loved chess and was an active member of the Metrowest Chess Club in Natick, Mass. He competed in many major tournaments in New England. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and respected him. May he rest in peace.
