I was one of the volunteers who had the privilege of knowing Alan. He was obviously well-loved. His family kept him company and advocated for the best possible care. He had a twinkle in his eye and a great sense of humor. When I found out he enjoyed chess, I started bringing him a chess joke every week. He was unfailingly honest in his reactions. If the joke was funny, he'd laugh; if it wasn't funny, he'd groan; and if it took some thought to figure out, he'd hesitate, think it through, and then smile broadly if he approved. I will miss him. My deepest sympathy to every person who loved Alan.

The Metrowest Chess Club will miss our longtime friend Alan. May his family find comfort knowing that he is beyond physical hurt.

On behalf of the Massachusetts Chess Association, of which Al was a member for many years when he lived in the Bay State, I extend deep condolences to the Schaefer family. Al loved chess and was an active member of the Metrowest Chess Club in Natick, Mass. He competed in many major tournaments in New England. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and respected him. May he rest in peace.
