Albert Byrd Obituary
Virginia Beach - Albert L. Byrd, 88, passed away surrounded by his loving family on December 5, 2017. He was a native of Virginia, born to the late Glen and Ethel Byrd. He was predeceased by his eldest child Allen Byrd, sisters Shirley Leapley and Katherine Dozier and one brother John Byrd.
Albert, known as "Poppy" to all children and adults alike was a dedicated husband and patriarch for three generations. He never missed the opportunity to make a child smile and feel welcome. He was a Navy veteran and spent 28 years in federal service. Albert enjoyed his family, the company of good friends, fishing and gardening. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 68 years Emily Byrd, children Buddy (Phyllis) Byrd, Teresa (Bill); one sister, Mary (Buck) Loan; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017, 1:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk VA 23502. The family will receive friends prior to service from 11:00 am 1:00 pm with a reception immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Hospice Foundation 1-877-470-6472. On line condolences can be offered at www.woodlawngroup.com

We called Mr. Byrd the "mayor" of our neighborhood. He was always warm and welcoming to our grandkids to his beautiful back yard for fishing or pool splashing. A kind, sweet, friendly, generous neighbor who truly lived what Jesus taught us... to "love thy neighbor as thyself." Deepest sympathy to Mrs. Byrd and family.
