There are non so eloquent as those who have gone before. One thing I remember about Mr Vera is he had a very soft manner and put all of his students at ease, thus creating a atmosphere conducive to learning, confidence and friendship building. I had been out of school almost 30 years when I, along with a group '65 graduates, attended the football game when Davis broke that infamous losing streak. Mr. Vera greeted my friends and me warmly and....all by first and last names. A remarkable individual.

My deepest sympathy to the Family of Al. May God Bless you and be a comfort to you.
I had the pleasure of being on the same Senior Softball Team at Bayland Park, with Al this season.
We were on the same team last season and many times in the past.
We played the outfield together and he was such an inspiration.
Al was such a kind and soft spoken man.
He always said thank you, great hit, good catch or next time, if things did not turn out so good.
Never a negative word.
He could hit a wicked line drive down the 3rd base line and everyone knew it.
It was a pleasure to have known Al.
Rest in Peace, Al Vera

My good friend, Al, is the kindest, most caring, special person I know. I spent many days after school in his classroom just talking with him. He kept me from quitting school when, as a troubled teen, I wanted to. He is the only teacher I remember because he is the only one that truly cares about me and all his students. We periodically kept in touch after I graduated from
Jeff Davis in '70. His profound influence was invaluable in helping me to turn my life in the right direction. He is one of the good guys!
Present tense is purposely used. Al, I will not say "goodbye," rather, "I will see you later."

Mr. Vera,
Teachers like you, Ms. Teran, Mr. Sanders, Mr. Gee, Ms. Kennedy, Mr. Mac, Ms. Whitty, Ms. Cain, Mr. Wells, Mr. Cherry, Coach Finley, and Coach Moseley were so special back then when I graduated from Davis. You were one of my favorite teachers at Davis. You made Civics and Economics so interesting for thousands of students at Davis through the years. I can still picture you standing by your room door with that big smile of yours and that famous crew cut greeting all the students walking in the hallway. You were always tough but fair plus your classes were so interesting. You made learning fun.
I also remember the Sunday afternoon softball games during the spring and summer at Love Field in the Heights. We always had enough players for a game or we played other teams from the Heights area. In your special way you taught us about competition, how to get along with each other, and to never give up. These are things that we carried on into our adult lives and that we never forgot. I still see some of my fellow classmates and we talk about those special Sunday afternoons. Vera's Bombers we called ourselves.
I bet you have already rounded up about 20 players up in heaven and have a softball game going right now. I bet you also told them that centerfield belongs to you. Thank you for teaching me so much about life. May you rest in peace, Mr. Vera. Go Panthers and go Navy.
