Alex was a great fencer, and true gentleman. We were fortunate to be teammates on the 1980 Olympic Team (my first, his final Olympic Team). Due to the 1980 Moscow Olympic boycott, the US Olympic Committee offered us an exhibition trip to China that was memorable for all of us. I remember that I had picked up a Walkman in Hong Kong (a new thing back then that had not yet come to the US) and we shared a passion for latin music on the duel headphones.
