Alfred Moore Obituary

Alfred (Don) Moore, born to Alvin F. Moore and Elma P. Moore died peacefully with his family by his side and went to his heavenly home after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Don was born in Shawmut, Alabama on November 14, 1931. He was the last surviving child of four siblings. After a brief stint in the United States Marine Corp., he was honorably discharged after the sudden death of his father. He returned home to care for his mother and siblings. In October of 1950, Don met the love of his life, Betty Jean Osborne, of Lanett, Alabama. They were married on December 23, 1950. This loving Christian union created three children, Mike, Mark and Melissa. Don spent the majority of his life, over 50 years, in the insurance industry. His insurance career began working for companies in Alabama and Georgia, and eventually landed him a management position with Liberty National Life Insurance Company (LNL). His success with LNL gave him the opportunity to open their first office in Bakersfield, California in 1968 and then he was transferred back to the southern states in 1972. In November of 1977, Don decided to step out on his own creating the Don Moore Insurance Agency in Bakersfield, California with the support of his wife Betty. He was awarded numerous accreditations from the National Association of Life Underwriters, CAHU, NAHU, and other insurance entities. He was a great motivator and friend of his personnel which also led to his success in the industry. Following the calling of His Lord, Don served many Southern Baptist Churches as an ordained deacon, Sunday school superintendent, usher, choir member/director, as well as serving on or chairing numerous committees. He loved the traditional gospel hymns and sang several solos and duets with his family. Though he will be truly missed by his loving family, friends and business associates, we all understand that he is now in the presence of the Lord. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, Norman and Thomas Moore, and his sister Betty Moore Tankersley. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Betty, and his children; Michael and Jean Moore of Lexington, South Carolina, Mark and Julie Moore of Bakersfield, California, and Melissa and Steve Tolin of Bakersfield, California. He is also survived by five grandchildren; Mindy and Stuart Moore, Brandon Moore, Hillary and Victoria Tolin. The family would like to offer many thanks to his special caregivers, Donna, Linda and Mary for their tender loving care and support. We would also like to thank everyone for their prayers, thoughts, emails, notes and calls during this very difficult time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to: Valley Baptist Church Media Ministry, the American Cancer Society, or Hoffman Hospice, Bakersfield, California. Visitation will be Monday, May 8th from 6 to 8 pm, at Hillcrest Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Road. Memorial service and Internment will be Tuesday, May 9th at 11 am at Hillcrest. Pastors Roger Spradlin and Larry Woods will be officiating. Don you were a wonderful person and a true friend to Jack and Ruth. I'll always treasure the last picture you took of Dad, standing in front of a TBM at Shafter airport. I'm sure your buddy is waiting to show you around. Please say hello to Dad.
