ALLAN SHAPIRO Obituary

SHAPIRO--Allan M.,

longtime resident of Scarsdale, NY passed away September 2, 2017. Born in Cincinnati, OH November 21, 1936, Allan graduated from Walnut Hills High School in 1954 and Cornell University with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1959. Allan was inspired by his family: father Herman was one of the first registered architects in Ohio and mother Esther was a gifted artist whose work is included in the National Museum of Women in the Arts. His great uncle, Dr. Bernard Revel, was the first president of Yeshiva University, and his uncle, Dr. Nelson Glueck, a former president of Hebrew Union College and noted archaeologist, inspired Allan to spend 13 summers working on the Harvard-Cornell archaeological expeditions in Sardis, Turkey. Allan's career spanned 57 years during which he served as architect, engineer, planner and program manager for over 100 airport, rail and highway transportation projects, public works, government buildings and Homeland Security critical infrastructure projects. Beginning in 1960 at Harrison & Abramovitz, Allan went on to work at HNTB, HOK, DMJM/AECOM and L-3. During the past 10 years, Allan was a Senior Transportation Consultant for Ross & Baruzzini, an international design and consulting firm, where he brought a personal touch and global understanding to client's projects through high level multi-discipline integration. During his successful career at Ross & Baruzzini, he helped develop some of the most complex security and advanced technology projects in the US for clients such as Boston Logan Airport, Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans, San Francisco International Airport and most recently the Security Program Management Contract for Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Allan served on boards of the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Institute of Architects, Airport Council International, the Construction Specification Institute and as Treasurer of the Joint AIA/ ASCE/ACEC/ARBTA/NSPE Committee. Allan was the Civilian National Vice President of the Society of American Military Engineers and belonged to the American Association of Airport Executives. Allan volunteered on boards for Westchester Community College, White Plains Hospital, Hoff Barthelson Music School, The American Geographical Society and three Land Use Boards for the Village of Scarsdale and the HUC-JIR Theological Seminary. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Healy Shapiro and their children: Peter Dwyer (Kim), Doris Boudens (Michael), Michael Dwyer (Lisa), Thomas Dwyer (Carol), Leslie Shapiro (Gretchen), Petra Vanderlinden, Peter Shapiro and Stephanie Tomao (Keith). He is also survived by his brother, Marc Shapiro and his sister, Jane Rosenbaum (Louis), his nieces and nephews and his sixteen grandchildren.

Allan was my first cousin, but in the 1960s and 1970s when I lived in Manhattan he was like a brother, even attending my sister's funeral in the midwest to offer moral support. He introduced me to such NYC landmarks as Barney Greengrass (borscht with fresh cream), Zabar's (whitefish, sable, and sturgeon), and Peter Luger's, whose steak sauce I still use. I think I last saw him at a family reunion a quarter-century ago, but I shall miss him nonetheless.

Allan has been a client since 1986 but more important a dear friend. We shared common interests as professionals and the biggest thing, we both wear hats. He gave me a few great hats over the years.
I will miss him. My deepest sympathies to Mary and the entire family.

Allan/PopPop/Father was a Great Man, of incredible professional career success, and, patriarch of an amazing family&circle of close friends. He Loved&Cherished "The Light of His Life", wife, MaryShapiro, and his family to the fullest extent. This was his mantra, as he Loved&Respected, as well, everyone in his life, whether that person was family, long time friend/colleague, or, stranger he met 1x in passing only. He treated everyone as if they were the most important person to him(and they were/are). He's missed equally by friends, family, former colleagues and competitors, as well, those he met briefly, in his wondrous and incredibly rich and well lived life. We're all kind of lost sheep/lost puppies in his absence. However, we all know we're better individuals for having Allan in our lives. If we all do our part to live our lives in much the same fashion&manner AllanMShapiro did, this world will always&still be beneficial&prosperous to as many possible, going forward,in the future. I'm thankful&grateful to have been able to call him BestMan, Friend&Father for nearly 47years. He'll be&is already missed more than words can define. I Love You, GoodSir! May You RIP&have fun(productive life)in HE#VEN, PopPop! May G#D AlwaysBlessYou.

Allan was a dear friend whom I had the pleasure of knowing and working with for nearly 30 years. A mentor with a gentle wit and kind heart, he will be sorely missed. My heart goes out to his family, but I know we will all see Allan again in a better place.
