ANDRE KHURI Obituary
Andre I Khuri passed into eternal life on August 30, 2017 surrounded by his family after an extended battle with cancer. He was born in Damascus, Syria on March 1, 1940 to Elias Khuri and Rosette Shami. He received his early education in Damascus, graduating from Damascus University before going to the American University of Beirut. He then pursued a PhD in mathematics from the University of Florida, graduating in 1969. He and Ronnie married in 1970 and moved to the Middle East for a few years before he decided to return to the US and further his studies at Virginia Polytechnic University. After finishing a PhD in statistics in 1976, he and Ronnie moved to the University of Florida, where he spent the rest of his career, retiring as full professor after 31 years. He was a prolific author having published over 100 journal articles as well as seven books. He was a fellow of ASA, fellow of AAAS, and elected member of ISI. He served as editor of several statistical journals. In addition to his work, he loved history, international politics, and astronomy.
His greatest passion, however was for his family and he is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ronnie, his son, Marcus Khuri and wife Azusa, his daughter Roxanne Louh and husband Nicholas, grandchildren, George and Gabriella Louh and Cynthia and Clara Khuri.
Services will be held at St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church in Jacksonville. Trisagion on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at 6PM. Funeral services will be on Monday, September 4, 2017 at 11 AM followed by burial at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John the Divine towards the building of the new church.

Prof Khuri was a kind man who in the 90s sent me a copy of the solutions to the first edition of his well-known "Advanced Calculus with applicxations in Statistics". May he rest in peace.

Hi Ronnie:
Sandy and I are heartbroken about Andre. He was so brave and remained positive to the end. We know the family is exceedingly proud of him as he has led an exemplary life with everyone he touched.
I saw Samy Suissa, who was my student, and told him about Andre, and he said he learned more from Andre's classes than from anyone else.
He took over from me in teaching mathematical analysis for stat graduate students when I moved over to consult in biostatistics. He had a lot of innovative ideas that he ran past me, and made this series a lot better.
I know this may not get into the gust book so late, but as Sandy told you we were in Montreal until yesterday 9/6.

Dear Ronnie, Marcus and Roxanne,
I am saddened to hear this morning that Andre has passed away. Andre was an extraordinary man who has gained the respect and admiration of many of us and his sudden departure highlighted the real sense of loss that will take time getting used to. He cared about people and I will truly miss his friendship. My heart is low knowing that this world has lost such brilliant man. May he rest in peace and May you find comfort in knowing he touched many lives through his remarkable journey. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
