In loving memory of a true Scholar and Gentleman with Sincere Condolences to Andre's family and his wife Shirley. My father had told me Andre was a great Scientist, I just knew him as a great person. I will always remember his friendly smile; it was a pleasure to have gotten to spend time with him.

Andre was a good friend and a brilliant scientist. My sincere condolences to Shirley. We stand ready to help you in any way.

Andre was recently (at ~91 years) taking tennis lessons to compete with younger players. In France it is the custom to shake hands in the morning when you first meet and again in the evening when you leave work. This is also the practice when we would have our weekly lunch in the park. Andre and I would have a contest who had the stronger grip. I would usually (always)loose. The highlight of this lunch would be when Andre pulled out a bottle of Aquavit and shared a few drops. Andre was a superb scientist, a wonderful colleague and a dear friend. I have know and worked with him over almost 60 years and have the highest respect and admiration for him. John C. Hopkins
