Anne Wright

Annie was my writing teacher at the School of Creative Arts in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, where I was a camper in the 1960s for 5 consecutive summers. I very gratefully remember Annie as terrifically supportive, as interested in all that we students wrote, and as one of the finest teachers I ever had. If I dare call myself "a poet," it's because at the summers I spent in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, where Annie was my wonderful Creative Writing teacher at the "School of Creative Arts," and where she taught and promoted us girls to write and use our imaginations in approaching really any subject in a creative way. Dear Laura and Family of Annie Wright, My high school English teacher in Mpls. MN first introduced me to the poetry of James Wright around 1974. I loved his poems and wrote to him to tell him so. Much to my surprise Jim wrote back! We corresponded back and forth until his death. I would sometimes share some of my writings and he would critique my work and encourage me to study, read, and keep writing. I went to New York to meet Jim in-person when he was in his final days at Mount Sinai...

I knew Edie for 60 years through my late wife, Alberta McConnell, who was her childhood friend. Edie was a wonderful strong but gentle person. She was devoted to her friends &, of course, to James. Though I did not see her often over the last years, each visit was as though no time had passed. I will miss her.

Annie was a dear friend, and I will miss her and cherish her memory.

Very sorry to read of Annie's demise - and around Thanksgiving time particularly sad as there were some lovely Thanksgivings in "the Wright Place" in Manhattan We met back in 1972 at the home of my Hunter college master's degree advisor (I never did finish grad school) on the occasion of a book discussion evening .
