Anthony Mastrovitch Obituary

Anthony Mastrovitch

Southport - Anthony Joseph Mastrovitch, 76, of Southport passed away Saturday, February 3rd 2018, at the Southport Nursing Center from complications of Alzheimer's Disease and Congestive Heart Failure.

Tony was born on November 9th, 1941, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, son of the late Anthony Francis and Caroline Mastrovitch of Fords, New Jersey. He was the brother of Carolyn Comer of Chardon, Ohio, who survives.

Tony was married to his wife, the late Carol Dinen Mastrovitch, for 48 years. They were married on November 16th, 1968 at St. Jerome's Church in West Long Branch, New Jersey. His surviving children are Todd A. Mastrovitch, M.D. of Ridgewood, New Jersey, and Lori and Jawad Salmi of Southport, NC; and his granddaughter Ana M. Mastrovitch of Glen Rock, New Jersey.

Tony graduated high school from Woodbridge High School, Woodbridge, New Jersey. He is a veteran of the Army and served in Panama as a communications specialist during the Vietnam War. After he returned from Vietnam, he attended electronics education at the RCA institute in NYC. He then started his career in electronics with Bell Labs, Homdel, NJ. He continued his career by gaining top secret civilian military clearance to work at Lucent Technologies, AT&T and then finally General Dynamics. He retired from General Dynamics in 2004 as an electrical engineer.

Tony's true joy was fishing, golf and enjoying spending time with his family and many close friends. He was very skilled at building both fishing rods and golf clubs. Frequently you could find Tony making golf clubs in his garage workshop.

In 2004, Tony and Carol retired to St. James Plantation. Here he enjoyed being close to the ocean, golfing, traveling and making new close friends.

Services for Tony will be at 4:00pm on Sunday, February 18th, 2018 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation, Southport. His cremated ashes will be rejoined with his wife's ashes and interred at Woodbine, Cemetery, West Long Branch, New Jersey in March.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 3:00 until 4:00pm at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers/baskets, memorial donations should be made to: Special Olympics at www.specialolympics.org/donate.

I loved Tony. I am the woman who visited at Dosher Nursing Home every week. Tony was such a kind man, a dedicated Catholic, and a true gentleman. I will miss our prayer together, and after he made the sign of the cross, he kissed my hand.

Tony and I were co-workers at AT&T Bell Labs for many years. And we were in the same softball league during some of those times. Several sore ribs and bruised ankles can attest to the fact that Tony brought the same enthusiasm to baseball (and other sports) as he did to his work. It was a pleasure knowing him for many years.

My condolences to his family.

Jim and I were saddened to hear of Tony's passing. He and Carol were our dear friends and travel companions for over 50 years. A wonderful chapter in our lives is now closed. As we have mourned and missed Carol these last two years, we will now miss Tony as well. They opened their home to us on numerous occasions and we shared a lot of laughs, golf and trips together. He was simply a sweet guy. Our condolences and sympathy to Todd, Lori, Jawad and Ana. You are in our prayers. Jim and Linda Leslie
