Byles Memorial Home - New London Obituary

ATHENA MISSIOS age 83 of Waterford, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 surrounded by her loved ones at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital. 


She was born in New London on February 2, 1942 to Spiro and Ethel Mandes. Athena was married to George D. Missios on March 8, 1962, who passed away November 21, 2015. 


Athena had worked for many years at BBP and later BJ’s in Waterford. 


She is survived by her daughter Helen (George) Dawley of Waterford and sons James (Christine) Missios and Mike (Beth) Missios of Uncasville, her seven granddaughters, Larissa, Marikka, Rebecca, Jennifer, Kassandra, Athena and Karina, as well as four great grandchildren, Evangelina, Iliana, Theo, and Athena. She is also survived by her brothers George, Peter, and John Mandes. She was predeceased by her brothers Arthur and Stephen Mandes.


She had an enormous and compassionate heart. Her family was always her priority and she worried about their well being at all times. She had a passion for cooking and loved Greek music. Despite all of her ailments, she was strong and resilient. She lived a full and happy life. She is immensely loved and will be greatly missed.


A Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 11 o’clock at St Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church, 200 Hempstead St, New London. Interment will be Cedar Grove Cemetery. A visiting hour will be held from 10 until the start of the service. Donations in her memory may be directed to St. Sophia Church.
