Athena Missios Obituary

Waterford - Athena Missios, 83, of Waterford, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

She was born in New London Feb. 2, 1942, to Spiro and Ethel Mandes. Athena was married to George D. Missios March 8, 1962, who passed away Nov. 21, 2015.

Athena had worked for many years at BBP and later BJ's in Waterford.

She is survived by her daughter Helen (George) Dawley of Waterford; and sons, James (Christine) Missios and Mike (Beth) Missios of Uncasville; her seven granddaughters, Larissa, Marikka, Rebecca, Jennifer, Kassandra, Athena and Karina; as well as four great-grandchildren, Evangelina, Iliana, Theo, and Athena. She is also survived by her brothers, George, Peter, and John Mandes. She was predeceased by her brothers, Arthur and Stephen Mandes.

She had an enormous and compassionate heart. Her family was always her priority, and she worried about their wellbeing at all times. She had a passion for cooking and loved Greek music. Despite all of her ailments, she was strong and resilient. She lived a full and happy life. She is immensely loved and will be greatly missed.

A Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at St Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church, 200 Hempstead St, New London. Interment will be Cedar Grove Cemetery. A visiting hour will be held from 10 a.m. until the start of the service. Donations in her memory may be directed to St. Sophia Church.
