Barbara Joyner Obituary

Mrs. Barbara Douglas Joyner, 68, of Charlotte, North Carolina, died at home surrounded by family on Friday, October 18, 2002 after a long battle with cancer. Barbara was born March 25, 1934 in the First Ward of Charlotte, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Henry Ray Douglas and Loma Deese Douglas. The service will be held at Southside Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 21, 2002. Thereafter, she will be laid to rest at Sharon Memorial Park. There will be no graveside service following. The family will greet friends Sunday, October 20th from 5-7 p.m. at McEwen Charlotte Chapel. Rev. Bill Saylor and Rev. Mike Lawing officiating. Pallbearers are Vin Davis, Greg Dossett, Eric McCoy, Ken Pate, Stephen Porter and Jeff Sprayberry.
Barbara was a member of Southside Baptist Church since 1944 and served as a choir member since 1950 and in numerous positions as a teacher and on committees. She considered her many friends there as family. She was a graduate of Central High School, the class of 1952. She retired from Prime Equipment Company in 1998 as Assistant Credit Manager after 23 years. She performed as a member of the "Singing Classics" producing two CD's "Without Him" and "Jesus is Lord of All."
Barbara is survived by her husband of 43 years Bruce Cone Joyner; son, Bruce Cone "Chuck" Joyner, II and wife, Lisa; son, Larry Douglas Joyner and wife, Joyce; daughter Tana Sivick and husband, David; four grandsons, Jim Crozier, Matthew Crozier and wife, Leah; Andrew Joyner and Caleb Joyner. Five granddaughters, Sushann Desjarlais and husband, Damon; Kirsten Joyner; Kathryn Joyner; Emily Joyner and Katie Joyner and one great-grandson, Tyler Desjarlais; brother Donald Douglas and wife, Louise and sister Louise Younts and husband, Ron, aunts, cousins, nephews and a niece.
Her dear friend and neighbor, Miss Betty G. Cunningham (lovingly called "Nana" by Barbara's grandchildren) gave Barbara friendship and companionship for over 40 years and loving care during her final months of illness.
Her sisters, Mary Todd and Betty Jo Douglas and a brother Merle Gordon preceded her in death.
Special thanks to Hospice of Charlotte for their assistance and care during her last months.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Barbara Douglas Joyner to Southside Baptist Church, 301 Elmhurst Road, Charlotte, North Carolina 28209.
