Decades ago, when Mrs. Mandel was First Lady of Maryland, I was a volunteer at a summer camp for individuals with muscular dystrophy. Mrs. Mandel made the drive down from Annapolis, just to say hello to us all. She arrived without fanfare, and couldn't have been more kind, speaking to all of us. She was a great woman. I helped keep her house clean. This was a shock.i never thought she was that old. She was set in her ways which is why we got along so well.
