Not sure what to say?

Uncle Battle was more like a friend than an uncle. He was only eight years older than me. I attended his graduation from West Point when I was 12 years old. I remember the occasion quite well.

While I was in service I ran into him quite accidently in Paris in 1945. We had a wonderful reunion and later on also in Paris with both Battle and Grace and Jeb Stuart their beloved cocker spaniel.

I will miss him greatly.

Uncle Battle and Grace were always supportive in my life. The friendly competition between Jim (husband) , a USNA graduate and Battle, the USMA alumn was warm and sporting. Our bridge games and boat rides together at my brother Bill and Betsy's house at Lake Norman will always be a highlight in our lives. Go Navy-Beat Army!

My mother, Therese Barksdale Vinsonhaler's youngest brother. My uncle Battle, always a delightful, witty, and most accomplished gentleman.
The last of a remarkable generation. So very sorry that he's gone. with love,
Jane Vinsonhaler Koch

Sheila and I loved to see Battle with Carmen or Dee every week at the truck. He liked to talk about my uncle and aunt, Alex and Sarah Hogan. Alex was a co-worker and friend at Merrill Lynch. I know that Battle will continue to serve us all through the lives he enhanced. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go to his family and those that knew and loved him. The void of his missed presence each week will be filled by the joyful knowledge of his just and well deserved reward of peace with...

So Sad to see Great Uncle Battle go; but I know he has passed on to a greater place. Love to Nancy and her family, "the Uncles", other Barksdales and all those who loved him from Mary Bryan Barksdale Wilson and family.

Godspeed to a wonderful gentleman who, as did many of the greatest generation, served his country, and lived an exemplary life. Sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.

With sincerest condolenses and great admiration for a truly remarkable man.

Battle will remain an inspiration to all who follow him in the Long Gray Line

Battle and Grace were close and cherished friends of my parents for many years. One of first families at St. James, as a youth I was a conscribed acolyte. Training consisted of close order drill Saturday mornings in St. James parking lot, conducted by Battle and my father, a retired Lt. Col. himself. I never knew he was a West Pointer, but Col. Barksdale was a man you couldn't help but respect and admire. I will always have fond memories of both he and his wife, Grace.
