Uncle Battle was more like a friend than an uncle. He was only eight years older than me. I attended his graduation from West Point when I was 12 years old. I remember the occasion quite well.
While I was in service I ran into him quite accidently in Paris in 1945. We had a wonderful reunion and later on also in Paris with both Battle and Grace and Jeb Stuart their beloved cocker spaniel.
I will miss him greatly.

Uncle Battle and Grace were always supportive in my life. The friendly competition between Jim (husband) , a USNA graduate and Battle, the USMA alumn was warm and sporting. Our bridge games and boat rides together at my brother Bill and Betsy's house at Lake Norman will always be a highlight in our lives. Go Navy-Beat Army!

Sheila and I loved to see Battle with Carmen or Dee every week at the truck. He liked to talk about my uncle and aunt, Alex and Sarah Hogan. Alex was a co-worker and friend at Merrill Lynch. I know that Battle will continue to serve us all through the lives he enhanced. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go to his family and those that knew and loved him. The void of his missed presence each week will be filled by the joyful knowledge of his just and well deserved reward of peace with our Lord.

So Sad to see Great Uncle Battle go; but I know he has passed on to a greater place. Love to Nancy and her family, "the Uncles", other Barksdales and all those who loved him from Mary Bryan Barksdale Wilson and family.

Battle and Grace were close and cherished friends of my parents for many years. One of first families at St. James, as a youth I was a conscribed acolyte. Training consisted of close order drill Saturday mornings in St. James parking lot, conducted by Battle and my father, a retired Lt. Col. himself. I never knew he was a West Pointer, but Col. Barksdale was a man you couldn't help but respect and admire. I will always have fond memories of both he and his wife, Grace.

Battle was a beloved, bigger than life patriot who, when I was in his presence, made me love America even more. He exemplified the best of the Long Gray Line. We will miss him.

I had the honor of meeting Col. Barksdale at several of our annual alumni dinners down in Jackson. He has always been one of my heroes, and a gentleman in the old tradition. He will be missed, but we living can count ourselves lucky that we had the privilege of knowing such a fine person. I will not be able to attend the service, but the Colonel and his fine family will be in my thoughts.
Respectfully,

I've been impressed with Battle since I first met him in 1993 - but my real thanks to him is for the impression he made and the inspiration he has contributed to my own son, along with all the other lives he has touched. You'll be missed, Battle. Be Thou at Peace.
