Bernice Apple Obituary


Family-Placed Death Notice

Bernice Stewart Apple died on September 28, 2004 at the Canterbury Court Retirement Center in Atlanta, Georgia. She was 96. She was born March 3, 1908 in Sciotoville, Scioto County, Ohio the first of four children of Stephen A. Stewart and Norma Coburn Stewart. Mrs. Apple graduated from Sciotoville High School and attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Later she taught for several years in the Portsmouth, Ohio public schools. She was married to the late David F. Apple Sr. on June 18, 1932 in Portsmouth, Ohio. They lived for six years in Huntington, West Virginia and Oak Hill, West Virginia, where Mr. Apple was employed by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. She and her husband were long time residents of Fort Thomas, Kentucky before they moved to Atlanta area on the occasion of Mr. Apple's retirement from the CVO Railroad in 1971. Mrs. Apple was for many years active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, being a direct descendant of George Stewart, a member of Rankin's Augusta County, Virginia Company in the Revolutionary War. She was a member and active parishioner of St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church in Atlanta. She served on several resident committees of the Canterbury Court Retirement Center. She was also a long time volunteer at the Shepherd Center helping with the annual pecan sale. Mrs. Apple is survived by two sons, Dr. David F. Apple, Jr. and his wife Jane of Atlanta; and James G. Apple Esq. and his wife Penny of Alexandria, Virginia; a sister Joan Ralston of Denison, Ohio; six grandchildren, Stephanie Kiser, Karen Mathews and Megan Stephenson all of the Atlanta area, David F. Apple, III of New York, New York, Meredith Gault and Miles S. Apple, both of Louisville, Kentucky, and ten great grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Apple will be held on Monday, October 4th at 10 o'clock at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta. She will be buried adjacent to her late husband in the family cemetery plot in South Portsmouth, Ohio. Expressions of sympathy for the death of Mrs. Apple can be made by donations in her name to either the Shepherd Center, 2020 Peachtree Rd., NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30309, or the International Judicial Academy of Washington, D.C., 1616 H St. Washington, D.C. 20006.
