Mr. Williams was born December 23, 1934, in Texarkana, Texas to the late Bert and Ethel Griffie Williams.   A gifted scholar and athlete, he was valedictorian and champion basketball player at Dunbar High School in Texarkana.  Following graduation, he earned a B.S. degree in Biology and Chemistry from Bishop College in Marshall, and a M.S. degree in Education from North Texas State University in Denton.  Mr. Williams was a classroom teacher and coach for twelve years at Kirkpatrick Junior-Senior High School.  He led the Kirkpatrick basketball team to the UIL State Champion in 1969.   His coaching leadership earned him a place in the Ex-Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association "Hall of Honor" in 1987 and Coach of the Year.  His dedication in serving as role-model for his students at Milton L. Kirkpatrick left a lasting effect on the students whose lives he touched. He loved connecting with former students who remembered his words of encouragement and inspiration.

After coaching, Mr. Williams joined Equitable Insurance.  An astute businessman, he was an Equity Qualified Representative for AXA Advisors, LLC, Chartered Life Underwriter, and Chartered Financial Consultant. He was recognized as District Manager of the Year in 1982, and Member of the Equitable Hall of Fame in 1986.

Mr. Williams was a Fort Worth community activist and civic leader more than forty years, representing the interests of neighborhood, city, state and national citizens.  He served on countless Boards as both leader, mentor and counselor, and was recognized for building alliances, and offering sound, practical solutions in many critical situations.  He was elected to the City Council of Fort Worth (1979-1989) and was Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Fort Worth.  Mr. Williams was a servant leader in the Fort Worth Community:  Chairman of the Board, Fort Worth Opportunity Center, co-founder and president, Southeast Fort Worth Federal Credit Union.  He later served on the DFW International Airport committees and became Chairman of the Board, DFW International Airport Board.  He was a member of the Board of Trustee, Employee’s Retirement Fund.  At the state-level, a Board of Directors member, Texas Municipal League.   He was the recipient of the Kappa Alpha Psi Man of the Year Award.

He was a devoted member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, May 2001, serving in the male choir, Sunday School, and Bible Study.  He was a former member and Deacon at the Historical St. James Baptist Church.

Not sure what to say?

I loved my Uncle Bert. He and my father, Gerald Beal, were like brothers. After my father passed, he stepped in to support my brother and I. He kept stepping in to my life when things needed to be done.

The city of Fort Worth was blessed to have him serve on city council, as Mayor Pro Tem, and more. He advocated for all people and particularly for the black community.

I will always remember and love him.
Dt. Cheryl D'Arnetta Beal Anderson

My name is Jacquelyn Tippett. He was always pleasant and easy going. He lived behind my parents house, where I grew up. He lived on Ellington, we lived on Bunche Drive. I called him Uncle Bert. He is truly missed. We used to talk between each others yards and I would visit or call when I was in town.

With Loving Memory to my precious loving, always showed up Cousin who was the last living close cousin and like a brother of my Daddy Alex Williams, jr of vallejo, ca. We send love to my beautiful cousin Dione Williams and her full family. I am so sorry I could not have made it. Timing was off. I am sending love to you all from northern California. Love Alexis Williams Patton

Brother Bert Williams was a friend, a confidant and a mentor to me and many others. I enjoyed playing golf with him and visiting with him and Sister Joyce Williams, who always beamed with a loving smile when he sang solos in the male chorus. I will miss his friendship and presence. He exemplified class and wisdom. Continued blessings and prayers of support to the family.

Condolences to the Family. May God forever keep and bless you.

Deepest Sympathy to the entire Family, Few people have achieved the position of respect and high esteem, which Bro Bert Williams enjoyed for so many years in this community, His absence will be felt by many, May God continue to comfort you and give you peace.
Sincerely,
Debra Sue Johnson

I called him Uncle Bert all my life. He was a neighbor and friend of my parents. Uncle Bert was always cordial, friendly and a sense of humor. Aunt Joyce and my parents grew up together in Longview, TX. You will be missed Uncle Bert, thanks for the memories.

Thank you for everything you did for my hometown of Fort Worth and the mentorship you provided me personally.

In loving memory of a wonderful person. One of our shining stars that guided us at Kirkpatrick Jr, Sr. High School. Whether on the field or in the classroom, we always knew he was there to guide us. We will love you and miss you always.
