Condolences to the Christian Family.
My memories of Coach Christian go way, way back. He 'discovered' me at St Mary Magdalen Grade School (in South St Louis) back in (about) 1958. I was a 6'5" lanky, uncoordinated 12-year old when Coach found me in Phys Ed class and asked me about playing basketball (which I had never done). I agreed and he gave me personal basketball instructions as my first coach. We had great teams in 7th and 8th grade under Coach's guidance. We then both...

As a freshman football player at DeSmet in 85-86, I was inspired by the Bear. He was a legend in every sense of the word. The foundation that he helped set and tradition that he started are among the reasons my two sons will be going to DeSmet (if they know what's good for them!) I was very disappointed and shocked when I found out that he would no longer be coaching there after my freshman year. I wish I had played for him. I went on to have several good seasons at DeSmet inspired by the...

Dear Christian Family,
I am very sorry for your loss, but I hope you gained some measure of comfort in the outpouring of love at the DeSmet Memorial Mass last Saturday, as well as the countless tributes here online.
I consider myself so very lucky to be part of a fraternity of football players, whose lives were changed by experiencing "The Bear". Thiry years later, I wake up in a sweat hearing, "Gaus, you're dancing" (it wasn't a compliment).
Next to my...

Bob Christian was ahead of his time in more ways than one. Who would have thought, in 1973, that his haircut of that time would be in vogue now among 21st-century Cy Young winners and rock stars?
With his loud, in-your-face manner as a football coach, it is hard to believe that Bob Christian was a connoisseur of subtle intellectual work -- but he was. As a teacher, he provided challenging material, really at the university level, to 14-year-old high school freshmen in his...

To the entire Christian Family, I offer sincere condolences. While I never played football for coach, I did have him for American History in 1975. I will never forget him, walking into class and with his booming voice tell us " 5 minutes!, 5 minutes! prepared for a quiz"- he was the best! God Bless all of you.
