Condolences to the Christian Family.
My memories of Coach Christian go way, way back. He 'discovered' me at St Mary Magdalen Grade School (in South St Louis) back in (about) 1958. I was a 6'5" lanky, uncoordinated 12-year old when Coach found me in Phys Ed class and asked me about playing basketball (which I had never done). I agreed and he gave me personal basketball instructions as my first coach. We had great teams in 7th and 8th grade under Coach's guidance. We then both ended up at CBC with Bob coaching "C" team and my playing "B" team basketball my freshman year (1960-61).
I did not maintain contact with Coach after graduating from CBC in 1964, as I moved out of town and on to 34 years in the Air Force. I found out about Coach's passing in the latest issue of the CBC Alumni Magazine. When I look back, Coach Christian is one of the most influential people impacting the course my life has taken.
Thanks Coach...may you rest in peace.

As a freshman football player at DeSmet in 85-86, I was inspired by the Bear. He was a legend in every sense of the word. The foundation that he helped set and tradition that he started are among the reasons my two sons will be going to DeSmet (if they know what's good for them!) I was very disappointed and shocked when I found out that he would no longer be coaching there after my freshman year. I wish I had played for him. I went on to have several good seasons at DeSmet inspired by the seniors and juniors that I saw that played their hearts out for him. (Roder, Theise, Eldridge come to mind) Glad he got to see DeSmet win the state championship a couple years ago..I was there too! God bless you and your family. Take comfort in the lives he touched.

Dear Christian Family,
I am very sorry for your loss, but I hope you gained some measure of comfort in the outpouring of love at the DeSmet Memorial Mass last Saturday, as well as the countless tributes here online.
I consider myself so very lucky to be part of a fraternity of football players, whose lives were changed by experiencing "The Bear". Thiry years later, I wake up in a sweat hearing, "Gaus, you're dancing" (it wasn't a compliment).
Next to my parents, Coach Christian had the greatest influence in my life. His ability to get more out of you, than you thought possible, is the greatest gift a coach, or teacher, could give.
The years I spent at DeSmet with Coach Christian were some of the best of my life and the life lessons I learned were invaluable. People like Coach come around once in a blue moon, and I feel blessed to have been touched by his influence.

Bob Christian was ahead of his time in more ways than one. Who would have thought, in 1973, that his haircut of that time would be in vogue now among 21st-century Cy Young winners and rock stars?
With his loud, in-your-face manner as a football coach, it is hard to believe that Bob Christian was a connoisseur of subtle intellectual work -- but he was. As a teacher, he provided challenging material, really at the university level, to 14-year-old high school freshmen in his American government class. He introduced us to the work of Lewis Mumford, quite a deep thinker. It was also at De Smet that we first were introduced to work by Marshall McLuhan, I think also by Mr. Christian.
He did me a huge favor by insisting that, stubbornly unathletic as I was, I should work as the statistician for the varsity football team during my senior year. Forcing me at least for a while out of my egghead-shell did me some good.
God bless you, Mr. Christian, may He console your fine family.

To the entire Christian Family, I offer sincere condolences. While I never played football for coach, I did have him for American History in 1975. I will never forget him, walking into class and with his booming voice tell us " 5 minutes!, 5 minutes! prepared for a quiz"- he was the best! God Bless all of you.

Coach Christian was a fantastic person and a great mentor. I graduated in 1986 and still have fond memories of him bellowing down the hall to pick up items or to offer constructive advice on how to move our tale ends faster. What a great man, this world will truly miss him, our loss is gods gain.
June 20, 2009
Coach Christian was an inspiration as a teacher and he will be greatly missed. His intensity and interest in politics and current events, along with those 52 typed reports he required for his class fueled my interest in current events that affected my career choices and taught me a work ethic that is invaluable. His classes mixed information with humor and he was truly one of a kind. My prayers are with his family. Rest in Peace "Bear."

Dear Pat,
I am so sorry that I cannot be with you and the boys today at the memorial service for Bob. What wonderful memories I have of Bob but, especially our early years at DeSmet when we were younger and our children were little. The fun we had after games, our trip together to Florida with the kids.....I remember Bob slamming on the brakes of the car, jumping out in the middle of traffic and running over to the front of the hotel to see this little old man. I thought "who is that and why is Bob so excited"? It was Casey Stengel and Bob was so overjoyed to see him, to talk to him and have his photo taken with the great Yankee manager. He was so happy he was like a kid in a candy shop! I think it made his year. Bob always had a joy for life that rubbed off on everyone around him. Dale and I have been blessed to be his friends.
God bless you and the boys my dear Pat.
Hugs,

To the Christian Family,
Mr. Christian was a true motivator and thinker. He forever touched my life in the sports arena. In 1971, as an eigth grader attending the summer sports camp at DeSmet, Mr. Christian took a special interest in me. I would later realize it was because I was all of 78 lbs. and 4'10" tall and had aspirations of playing freshman football. He pretty much made it happen for me. I got a call at home telling me to report to practice the next day even though I had been cut on the last try-out day. Coach, I gave it all I had every day so that I didn't let you down. Three years later, I would be called into his office so that he could voice his disappointment in me guiting wrestling my junior year. I can still hear his words, "You boys come in here so full of energy and life Freshman year and then you gradually let it get away and you let yourself down." To this day, I regret not heeding his words of wisdom. He was a wise man and cared for the students of DeSmet during my time there.
In the classroom, he was equally inspiring while teaching me American Government. I was raised in a Republican household and boy did we have great discussions. He called me the "Hawk" due to my pro military "Hawkish" views that I got from Dad (Sadly, he died on Saturday right after Mr. Christian). I feel your sorrow, and know how tough this is for the people who loved him. Take comfort in the massive outpouring of respect for this man that you are receiving. He touched many lives. You will be in my prayers.

I was saddened to hear the news of Coach passing on. A DeSmet grad of '83, I never played football, but took his government course and recall with a smile the barking in PE class as he told us what he thought of our push ups. His presence and character are ingrained in my memories of what makes DeSmet a great school and a Jesuit education one to be proud of. "Tuck in those shirts boys!" I can hear him now.

What can I say about "Coach" I had the great honor of practice teaching under him as a young teacher at DeSmet. I would sit in the back of his room and marvel how he would have the students on the edge of their seat. He would mention FDR's name in class and genuflect. I hoped I would be half the teacher and coach he was. He also let me coach C-team football in the fall of '72 with Frank Hawkey and then Jesuit scholastic Wally Sidney. I learned so much from him. I owe so much of my success to "the Bear" as I have gone on to spend some 33 years in high school teaching, coaching and administration. He loved DeSmet--the Spartans---his students and players. It was in large part because of Coach Christian that I was hired to teach and coach at DeSmet in the fall of 1976. I'll never forget him telling the boys to buy their half shirts, their shimmel(sp?) shorts and their Champion Jocks. There was nothing like Saturday afternoon football games at DeSmet----there was the Bear telling Kenny Klump to Pitch it on the option, the Students were cheering their Xtian Cheer, "We got the Bear Roar-Roar" and their was Fr. Holmes walking the sideline saying his rosary. I am so happy whenever I would see him these last few years I had the opportunity to tell him how much he meant to me and thank him for all he had done for me personally and professionally.
Happy Fathers Day---Coach--Thanks for being a Dad to all of us.

Many condolences to the Christian family; you had a special one among you.
I too rank among the thousands of athletes and students whose life was touched by “The Bear.” He was my typing teacher, homeroom teacher and football coach.
To this day, I cannot sit in front of a keyboard without thinking of coach Christian and football. I can’t imagine a typing class anywhere more enjoyable than mine. We learned to type in the “three point stance.” We “attacked” the keys like a striking linebacker. We weren’t just learning to type, we were preparing for battle! He was the kind of teacher who made you WANT to go to class.
On the football field, what can I say that hasn’t already been said? He was larger than life. He was inspirational. He was fearsome. You worked hard to keep his steely glare off of you. It hurt to lose, not because of my pride, but because I felt like coach Christian deserved to win every game. My junior year was his last as coach at DeSmet. We won just three games that year (although we still beat SLUH). My class took it very personally. I could see it in the eyes of my fellow teammates that next season. We seemingly channeled The Bear’s drive and carried his spirit to a 7-2 regular season and a trip to the playoffs.
Some of my most intimate memories of coach though were from homeroom. Those few, precious minutes we spent with him each day, listening to his scruffy voice bark out the box scores from the newspaper, were priceless. There is not a high school within 100 miles of St. Louis whose mascot coach Christian didn’t know!
Years later, when our paths would cross, coach always had a smile and a twinkle in his eye for me. No matter how down or hurt or sick he was, he always made me feel like a million bucks.
I’ll miss you coach!

Bob and family, I am deeply saddened by the loss of your dad. Having lost my dad almost a year ago makes it really hit home. Condolences to the Christian family on your loss. "Coach" was the best teacher I ever had. I ran into him in Fort Lauderdale several years ago, and as this jogger was coming back to the hotel I said "you look just like the best football coach in STL", and then came the familiar laugh and a great two hours of catching up over coffee. He made many lives better. It is inspiring to read the notes from his many students and players along with his associates and old friends.

My family and I would like to pass on our thoughts and prayers to the Bob Christian family - extended and otherwise. Coach was one of a kind, a very memorable individual who had the best interests of the people whose paths he crossed. His style was unique, both on the field and in the classroom.
I have so many memories (mostly good) of "Coacher" that make me smile & laugh when I reflect upon them. Coach's intensity, caring and love were just a few qualities that made him special. He was instrumental in my experiences & success at De Smet and later at Mizzou, where I was fortunate to have gone on a football scholarship.
It wasn't usually a relaxed atmosphere at practice with the Coach, but he taught you so many good things - life lessons that could be applied thru life's journey - to this day. And who said practice was supposed to be fun anyhow (right Coach)?
But his fun-loving nature and sense of humor combined with his toughness made him a special guy, and set him apart from most people. He will be greatly missed I'm sure by his family and by all of the lives he touched along the way. But he will not be forgotten.
My Dad passed away about 1 year ago, and he & the Coach were good pals. I'm sure by now they have reconnected and have had a few cold ones.
I will not be able to attend the services on the 20th, but will certainly be there in spirit. God Bless and take care Coach - I'll always remember you fondly.

Condolences to Bob Christian's family on the loss of a wonderful man.
Like many others here, I had the privilege of being in Coach Christian's American Government class at CBC. He instilled in me a love of politics that lasts to this day. I can recall him bringing in politicians of all stripes, from Tom Eagleton to A. Clifford Jones, to speak with our classes.
Coach Christian also helped me with some public speaking tips when I was in Coach Gerdeman's speech class. His boisterous and gregarious manner would be a little intimidating, but all of his students quickly learned that he had nothing but their best interests at heart.
Years later I had the pleasure of being in a sports officials' group with Coach. Though we never worked a game together, I treasured the comraderie.
May God bestow His blessings on Bob Christian and on his entire family.

I had the good fortune to meet Bob Christian while he worked at United Van Lines. Bob became a valuable asset to me since he always was ready to help, motivate or explain. When I went to United Van Lines from my agency in Virginia for business - Bob was one of the first people I went to meet. He truly is an unforgettable person. I hope the family finds comfort in knowing how well loved he was & how much he was respected in all walks of his life.

Such great messages from everyone and Coach Christian also touched my life in a way that has been described by many on this website.
So many funny stories. Who could forget him pacing the halls between periods barking at the younger students to pick up the trash as they were trying to avoid him - "You love your school? Pick it up!!". Or the countless "not to be confused with..." analogies during Government class. I'll never forget. We had a football pass play called Llupo Left and Llupo Right. I'm sitting in the first chair, first row, right next to him as he flips the page on our daily lesson to the term "loopholes". Immediately, he looks out of the corner of his eye, slowly turning his head to me, I primarily QBed the team that year, and sneered "Not to be confused with Llupo Left and Llupo Right, which BETTER be executed Friday night!".
Rest in peace Coach. We need more people like you. My prayers are with you and your family.

Condolences to the Christian family from a former government student at CBC. He was a great man who taught us well in the classroom, on the field.
I played for Coach on the "C" basketball team when I was a freshman and he marveled at my inability to jump any higher than about three inches off the floor, but his encouragement was important to me and our team which only lost one or two games the whole year.
I also played football under "The Bear" and in our senior year we defeated our rivals at St. Louis University High School in the first high school football game played at Busch Stadium II in 1966. We were undefeated that year, and much credit goes to Coach Christian for his leadership and encouragement.
All the best to the Christian family.

Bob Christian - A true man's man!
He would never allow you to not do your best. I know that he had been sick for a while but I always felt that nothing could beat him. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all! It is never easy to lose someone who made such an impression on so many lives.
He made me a better player and a better student. He pushed me so much that I know that I can always do more. I am the running back - as related by Phil earlier - while coming off the field with a bloody hand, sticks two of my fingers in his mouth and says, "Get back in there!"
You always cringed when he called your name especially when you knew you were in trouble. It so happened senior year I got jugged and was late for practice. Coming out to practice on the parking lot, he saw me. Before I even hit the practice field, he barked, " Andrzejewski, pickup the dummy and start running!" I ran half the practice with a practice dummy on my shoulders in full pads around both the soccer field and football fields. Once we started offensive scrimmage, he calls me over and proceeds to give me the ball ten times in a row. Thankfully I had a great line with Tim, John, Mike and others. I didn't get touched at all ten runs in a row. Coach looks at me in the huddle as I am panting and screams, "Why you breathing so heavy for!!" He knew that I knew better than to get jugged during the season. I was letting down my teammates and he wouldn't have it. I will never forget him as a coach and teacher.
Coach - I love you and will never forget what you have taught me! Thanks
God Bless you all!!

Coach Christian, I never addressed him any other way, taught me to set high goals for myself and how to achieve those goals both on and off the field. As a sophomore, he had me play in practice directly across from my senior brother, who ended up with a football scholarship to University of Arizona, on both offense and defense. I learned a lot that season!
The following season, he took a very small team and taught us to work together and play for one another. Working together, we made it to the sate championship game. I learned a lot that year too!
Off the field, he demanded my best in the class room and more so in how I conducted myself as a person.
My son will be a freshman at DeSmet this fall and I hope he has the privilege of that caliber of teaching, coaching, and guidance towards manhood.

I am sorry to hear of the passing of Bob. Most of the remembrances I have read are of his days at DeSmet. He was a great baseball coach and teacher at CBC before going to DeSmet. I played baseball for "The Bear" at CBC from 1963-67. He led us to the semi-finals of the state tourney vs. Springfield at the old Busch Stadium in 1964. We lost but I will never forget his drive to be the best that he instilled in us. We had many fine teams during those years and played our home games in Forest Park at then Diamond C. So, on behalf of several Cadets back then like Bill Davis, Bob Long, Jim Scheutz, Tim McAvoy, Jerry Fuerst, John Horvath and many others, we keep the Christian family in our thoughts and prayers. We are better men today for the relatively short time we spent with Bob. I also remember Bob as one of the better basketball referees in the St. Louis area.May he rest in peace.

Dear Christian Family,
My sincere condolences on the passing of your father. I am out of town on vacation and will be unable to attend your fathers service.
I think the greatest testament of an individual is the impact they have on the lives of others. Your father changed the lives of thousands of young men. Whether as a football coach that motivated his players to over achieve or as a teacher challenging his students, Coach never tolerated anything but one's best. Coach was one of a kind and made everyone around him feel better and become a better man.
He has changed my life for the better and I know the same is true for all who have been touched by your father. I think it is impossible to know Bob Christian and not have come out a better person. Clearly he was a Man For Others!!
I will keep him in my prayers.

June 17, 2009
My name is Rodney N Eldridge, Class of 1986. Unfortunately, I think I was in the last class to play football for Bob Christian at DeSmet. By my senior year, some may have felt that his football methods were outdated, but there was never any question about his passion for football, and for teaching young men to push themselves. He demanded maximum effort from his players, and he believed that you had to beat the best, to be the best. DeSmet was always known for its grueling football schedule, and I know there were those who tried to convince Coach Christian to schedule some so-called “lightweights,” but he would not hear of it. As a private school, not attached to any conferences at the time, Bob always sought out the very best teams in the area to play against. With the likes of Sumner, East Saint Louis, SLUH, Jeff City, and Columbia Hickman on the schedule every year, we had to be ready to compete against the best players every week, with every ounce of effort and energy we had. Perhaps winning became more important to someone, but I believe everyone on the DeSmet football teams in 85 and 86 would tell you that we were always in the best shape, we were always prepared to compete, and we were in every game right to the end. We were the best 3-7 team in the area, and considering the schedules we played; perhaps we were lucky to win the games we won. It was many years later, when I finally realized that Coach Christian was not only teaching us football, he was preparing us for real life situations and conflicts. He was preparing us to accept all of life’s challenges, and make no excuses.
As a senior, I was also lucky enough to have Bob Christian’s Government class. That is to say, I took his class, figuring it would be an easy “A,” since he was my football coach. It was always fun, yet it was anything but easy. But I remember, it was very interesting how much he loved and believed in the government system of this country. In the classroom, much like on the football field, that deep, scruffy, Drill Sgt. voice set him apart from everyone else in the building. He liked to keep a bit of a scowl on his face, just to mess with the non-football kids, but inevitably, his humor could not be contained. It was always evident in the classroom. Everyone got a progress report, no matter what their grade was in his class. I believe he did that just to amuse himself. Another one of Bob’s signature moves in the classroom was the 10pt quiz. If you knew nothing else, every day before class, you knew there was going to be a quiz. The thing was, there was literally no way to fail any of his quizzes, as long as you had read the assignment given, and/or watched the assigned news program. Of course, Bob still had his own personal, comical way of doing things, and his quizzes were no different. I cannot tell you how many times there was a question like this on his quizzes:
“My favorite Government Teacher is…” ______?
Coach Christian was one of those people you just don’t forget. The voice, the hair, and occasionally the attire, were all his own. He wore his heart, his humor, and his passion right on his sleeve. I guarantee that no one, before or since, has patrolled the halls of DeSmet High School, in grey ½ shirt and shorts, quite like Bob Christian. He was an amazing man, and he was truly old school.
It was not unusual to happen on Coach at some local sporting events. So, it’s fitting for me, that the last time I saw Coach Christian, was at the DeSmet State Championship Game, at the Dome, against Hazelwood Central. Bob was BRIMMING!! The pride on his face was truly something to see, and I felt it too. When those boys won state, it was like we all won state. I cannot imagine how Coach Christian truly felt, but the huge smile on his face, as he sat surrounded by several of his former players, and their families, said it was a moment he would always cherish. He is someone I will always cherish as well and in closing, I’d just like to offer my thoughts and prayers to Coach Christian’s family. I hope it helps them to know how many lives he touched, and how many times he is remembered. All these years later, I still imitate his famous 10 second countdowns, and “Pencils Down! Passem Up!” “Shoulda been here by now!” “You’re not hearing me Mr. Eldridge.”
Coach, you will be missed. You will never be forgotten.
Sincerely,
Rodney N. Eldridge

Dear Family,
Many wonderful things have been written here about your father, your husband, and what makes them wonderful is the truth they're written in. Coach Christian exemplified DeSmet's motto of "forming young men for others". And for an age that closes with Bob's death, DeSmet and "Coach Christian" are inseparable. He formed us. I'm a better man because of my years spent under him and some of that I will pass onto my sons and my daughter. He made better men of us. He made a better man of me. Thanks, Coach.

I love Bob Christian. I didn't know him while he was at Desmet but met him while working at United Van Lines. What a great man...what a great voice. I am so sad to learn of his passing.
My condolences to his family...I am sure he will leave a huge hole....that's just the kinda guy he was..larger than life.

Though I never played for or was taugth by the Bear, being a close friend of the family gave me the pleasure of getting to spend alot of time with him over the years. From the X's & O's that were permanently indented into their kitchen table, the democratic party or the 2:00 a.m. spaghetti he so loved to make, he was the most passionate man I ever met and he will forever leave his mark on me. The evenings at Cunetto's, the Rams tailgate partys will not quite be the same without him. To my five "other" brothers and of course my "second" mother Patricia, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Christian Family,
It is very sad to hear of your father's passing. I never had him a coach, but he was Coach Christian to me. My fond memories of DeSmet include many of Coach Christian. He exposed many of us to our country's government process and he did it with a zeal not matched by any other teacher. He definitely left his mark on me and I am sure many other students.
I was lucky to run into Coach on a airplane flight after he had left DeSmet. It was my surprise that he remembered who I was. I will not forget Coach and what he taught me.

My prayers and deepest condolences to Jimmy and the family.
Coach's vivacious energy is truly missed. Remembering the fun times at Cunetto's always brings a smile. He was never shy of speaking his mind... loud and clear. Thanks Coach for being you! May your spirited enthusiasm live through us all!
God Bless,

The Christian Family,
Please accept my condolences. I am honored to have known Coach during my years at DeSmet. He is far and away the best teacher I've had at any level. He didn't just make us work, he made us think. He required us to have opinions and he respected them; even if they were different from his own. I can only imagine the depth and breadth of his impact on so many young men throughout the years. He lives on in all of us.
Sincerely,
John Seiler, '85.

The Bear was a great inspiration to us all. I hated 3 a day practices but his love for the game and for us showed through his tough exterior. He was a man's man. We will miss the Bear and he died too young. Timothy J. Bopp, M.D. Class of '80.

Coach Christian was a great coach and an even better human being. It was a pleasure playing for him as well as just knowing him. He will be sorely missed. Take care and try and remember the lives Coach Christian touched.

To The Christian Family: While I never had "Coach Christian" as a coach, he was a joy to have as a government teacher and a supporter of all the sports at DeSmet. Each year he dragged all of the government students to the city courts to learn about government in action (and also to serve as a warning as to what could happen if many of us continued on our paths). To describe Coach in his own words, he was a "great American" but he also was a true original. My condolences on your loss. Our schools today need more like men (and teachers) like Mr. Christian. -- Chris Murphy, DeSmet '85

Bob Christian made boys into men. He did that in the classroom, he did that on the field. He enhanced our polical science classes at CBC by making CBC a prime stop for candidates, such at Senator Eagleton. And, what a day when Vice President Humphrey came to 6501. Mr. Christian made it happen. What a fine man. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Christian has left a deep and lasting impression for all of us to remember and carry forward.
While a Sophomore in his American history class, he imparted to me the virtues of being true to oneself, fellowship and service.
His inner smile always shone through a gruff and get'er done manner. I will treasure my memories forever.
My deepest sympathy to all of your family.
God bless,

Greg Christian-Thank you for the happy hour, nights at Cunetto's with you & your father and the work gang. I don't think I've ever meant anyone with such enthusiasm, besides you. Bob was such a pleasure to spend time with, very kind, very funny, but loud. It was a blast, and I'm happy I had the honor of meeting such a wonderful person. My condolences to all of your family. He is at peace now.

Some of Bob's son's might remember me. My name is Bob Graham and I used to swim at Crestwood Swim Club back in the late 70's. I also went to DeSmet and graduated in '81. I would see Bob at the pool and then he would wink at me in the halls of DeSmet. I always enjoyed his personality. My prayers are with all of you. Be well.

Coach Christian made a life lasting impression on me for the better. "You bum around with bums-you'll become a bum". He cared more about making his players into men than football players. My sympathies and prayers go out to his family and all the many lives he touched.
June 16, 2009
I knew Mr. Christian as I grew up down the street.
He was, as most folks here have stated, a very outgoing, gregarious, benevolent, whitty, and loud, man - he made an impact everywhere and in everything he did.
What has not yet been said, is that he was a tremendous father to his 5 sons. I was very envious of my childhood friends, his sons, for the character and jovial influence their father displayed just hanging around the house and being their dad.
Fortunate kids have fathers like him, fortunate students have him as teachers, fortunate athletes have coaches like him, fortunate players have him as a referee, and fortunate friends feel proud to have known of him and his character during his life.
For all those many many fortunate ones, his legacy will most definitely live on.
We'll miss you Mr. Christian.

Dear Boys,
When I started out in coaching, your dad always treated me like an equal. He always made the peole around him feel important. Being in his company was never dull. May God bless you and your families.

Coach Christian was a great role model for so many. He demonstrated to all of his students and players commitment, intensity, and caring about what one does and how one performs.
His legacy is that he made a very positive difference to a great many of us who were fortunate enough in the "Glare of the Bear" as I was at DeSmet on his first teams at DeSmet.
May he rest in peace with the Lord, our God in Heaven. I'm sure he is enjoyong now assisting our ultimate Coach

To Coach Chritian's Family: I never played for Coach Christian on the field, but he taught me American Govm't at DeSmet FS83/WS84. To this day he remains one of the best teachers I ever had. He taught more than just the textbook. He had us do 16, one page, single spaced reports per quarter, on things like Crossfire(an old CNN show) Newsweek articles etc. He lit up a room like nobody else. And always before a test, would spread our desks out, and in that one of a kind voice say, "Spread 'em out, spread 'em out, this ain't no hippy dippy love in." I haven't seen him since I graduated, but will miss him always.

So many memories of Coach. From his, "Five minutes...five...four...three, two one - hand them in," in government class to wind sprints into the darkness of a school night.
One I'll never forget: I was a wing back waiting for coach to give me a plat to shuttle into the huddle of a home game. Our talented running back comes to the sideline with blood streaming down his finger. He cut it pretty badly the previous play. With saucer eyes he runs over and holds it up. He says only, "Coach!" Coach looks around, takes Brian's finger and sticks it in his own (Coach's) mouth like a lolly pop, licking off all of the blood. Coach yells, "There, get back in there!" and gives me the play. Its the heat of a big game and Brian and I are looking at each other as we run to the huddle thinking I can't believe what I just saw.
We loved the guy!

Aunt Pat, Greg, Bobby, Danny, Timmy and Jimmy (and girls).....
Wow, what can I say? My heart is aching for you, as well as the rest of the family.
I remember growing up where mom and Uncle Bob would laugh, laugh, laugh. We would be at Aunt Suda's, spinning in the chair, mom would be yelling and your dad would be encouraging us. What wonderful times and memories we all have, and that's the best we could ever ask for.
Our family has lost one of our greatest, and it's up to our generation to keep our families close. Life is too short, we don't want to wait until it's too late. I love you guys!

I'm stunned, because Coach was the type of person I just thought would live forever. Actually, he will for me. He was influential in my interest in politics, which was the foundation for my career in political journalism. But he also influenced me to officiate basketball. One reason DeSmet is a great school is Bob Christian was there in the early years and laid down a foundation that will last forever.

My deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers to Coach Christian's family and close friends. I was on the football team from 1968-72, the team that beat SLUH for the first time. I remember Coach asking me in class one day, what has the football program (his program) taught me. The program and Coach Christian gave me an inner confidence that is still wth me today. Thanks Coach!! You will be missed and remembered fondly.

Bob's life was filled with enthusiasm, humor and friendship. Whether it was in the homeroom, on the football or baseball field or on the basketball court, he was an intense teacher and coach. As a sports official, he showed the poise on the court and field that earned him the respect he enjoyed in the classroom. Those who knew him at CBC and DeSmet will never forget him.

I am HONORED to have called Coach my friend.
I remember the first time I saw him at one of my football practices. I think my brother Richard - who was helping as an assistant Coach on the team - told me that he was there. He came to watch (his son) Danny (and our South County Mavericks team) and the buzz that went around the field was electric. We ALL knew that "COACH CHRISTIAN from DeSmet" was watching and I assure you that was one of the hardest hitting practices I ever took part in. We ALL wanted to make that special play, so he'd notice us. I really do remember Coach Martin, and Coach Lombardo, and Coach Crimmons and almost every one of my teammates from that GREAT Mavericks team - We ALL knew we were part of a special team. I have seen the love and respect that he got from all of his former players and understand why it is that he effected people the way he did. It is obvious to anyone who has ever been privileged enough to play on a GREAT team, that the memories run thick and eternal for it's members. Great teams begin with GREAT LEADERS - the Mavericks had "Coach Dwight" and I'm certain that Coach Christian's leadership impacted so many of his warriors over the years. What a feeling that must've been for him. I KNOW that he sensed it, and I am in AWE!!!
His passion for life was something I hope I can emulate - although, I know I will fall FAR short, but his example is something I will cherish.
I am eternally grateful for his friendship - and will miss him every day. I'm sure his entire family knows how much he was loved, by so many.

Dear Christian Family,
Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. Although our families have been disconnected since we moved to Phoenix, I know through the years there was much joy, great memories, and lots of football. I can only think that at this time Jack & Bob are discussing football strategies and the craziness of the Cardinals finally making it to the Superbowl. Much love and many prayers, Kathleen (Kersting) Leonard - Phoenix, AZ

Dear Family,
Bob was a huge figure in my life. Outside of my father, he was probably the most influential person in shaping my personality and who I am today. I have tried very hard to pass these values onto my sons and daughter. They learned of the Bear since they started taking their first steps.
His passion and zest for life are what I remember the most. I will miss our talks about sports and of course politics. Everytime I watch C-Span or the History Channel, I will think of him.
Please treasure your wonderful memories as I do.
God bless,
Bill Holland

I offer sincere condolences to the entire family of Bob Christian, and to his many friends, all of whom will suffer the loss of this caring, loving, passionately-devoted to causes leader of men! Seldom did we wonder about Bob's feeling on many issues; we knew! He loved his family and he loved anyone who demonstrated a commitment to improve social justice, and he was willing to work to improve conditions for every level of society. Bob was a "Hall of Fame" citizen on many levels, not only in sports, and anyone he called "friend" will be saddened by his loss. I know that I am saddened now. Best wishes to Bob's family.
