BRET KROH Obituary

Bret Alan Kroh, 58, of Gardner, Kan., passed away Sunday, January 29, 2017, at Olathe Medical Center. A visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, and a Celebration of Life service will take place at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, both at the First Baptist Church of Shawnee, 11400 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, KS 66203. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Life Program at City Union Mission. He was born June 7, 1958, in Kansas City, Kan. He graduated from Open Door High School in 1976, and then attended and graduated from Tennessee Temple University in 1980. He was married to Diane Tangblade for 34 years. After college Bret taught several subjects at Open Door High School. This job led to other roles in the church such as youth pastor, school superintendent, and an ordained associate pastor. During that time, he also served as a Chaplain with the KCK Police Department. For the past 10 years Bret has worked at City Union Mission in the Christian Life Program; mentoring and equipping men to lead purposeful, Christ-centered lives. No matter where he was in life or the position he held, Bret lived to serve and minister to others. He will be remembered as a loving husband, brother, father, uncle, friend, and papa (with a red truck). Bret was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his beloved wife, Diane Kroh, two children, Justin Kroh (Rachel), and Jessica Bryant (Nathaniel), sister, Susan Elliott (Greg), two nieces, three nephews, and three grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew, and Kaleeska. I met Bret in Tn Temple Univ and we quickly became friends. One year we were roommates in Martin dorm. He was mature for his age, warm-hearted, a thinker, concerned, and a positive young man who never said anything negative about anyone. He was the rare person you anticipated seeing because it was always uplifting. My sincerest condolences to his wife, children, and sister. Heaven is a warmer place because of Bret.

Dear Diane, Thank you for the recent phone message informing me with your sad news. My heart aches for you and your wonderful family. Although I never personally met your husband, I can clearly see what a fantastic person he was through reading about him. As heaven has gained another angel, I pray you will be blessed with the peace that passes all understanding; and the grace, strength, and wisdom, needed to continue on your path. With deepest sympathy, Cathy DeKnight-Riley (your friend from Meyer Music).

I have no pictures and I have no words of any real comfort, but I do have special memories.

Our family also grew up with Bret at Open Door and then had him for a teacher at the ODBS. No matter what was going on, he would have some caring words to say, some kind of encouragement and he did so, so eloquently. And sometimes he was just quiet. I remember when one of my best friends from school was dying from cancer and it hurt so deeply to know that we would be saying our last goodbyes to one another, I called him. I knew he'd want to know the downturn of the situation. He stayed on the phone with me and listened to me cry. I bet that was at least 45 minutes and maybe an hour. But he kept saying to me that he had no where he had to be. He didn't want to let me go knowing that I was so upset. He was touched by this tragedy as well and when we saw each other after her passing, we both had tears streaming down our faces, not a word needed to be said. He was empathetic, and compassionate and loving.

To his family, I send my deepest, warmest sympathies. You were blessed with such a special husband, brother, father, grandfather, uncle that so many love. What memories we all have. His smile and laugh~ all I can do is thank the Lord that our paths were meant to cross and what a blessing he was to know on this earthly journey! Thank you for this opportunity to share a little bit of how much he meant to me and our family. The days ahead will be rough but the knowledge that some day soon we will be reunited gives us all hope and strength to go forward, to challenge ourselves to be better to one another just as he was. God's blessings for you all.

It was so good to visit with you, Diane, at the Sprint Center on Sunday. Shocking to us how life changed in a matter of days. The LORD new the timeline and I know you made the most of it. Our first introduction to Bret was watching him pull a television to the top of a light pole at youth group. Then we watched what happened when it broke into a ca-jillion pieces. Also, you are a great lady to let the youth group teepee your house! Hugs!

Some of my memories of Bret (Mr. Kroh) include him teaching, playing guitar, coaching basketball, walking across a snow covered mountain, defending me at the FBI building in D.C., leading our senior play, and officiating my wedding. Oh, and his laugh... loved his laugh! I'm praying for Diane and the family!! And I'm so grateful for Bret's salvation because of his faith in Jesus! We WILL see him again!!

I attended Open Door Baptist High School with Bret back in 1975. Even though I only knew him for such a short time, I have always remembered Bret as a very Godly teenager with a gentle disposition.
I'm sorry for your loss but encouraged to see that he had served God his entire life.

Diane,
Bret was an amazing man. His heart and love for others left such an impression on me. So many of my favorite memories from the teen years involved Bible study at your house, singing worship songs while he played the guitar, and honest conversations about faith.
I'm incredibly sorry for your loss. Bret will be missed by all who knew him. Praying for you and your family during this unimaginably difficult time.

Brett was authentic. I hesitate to use that word because it's used too freely today...but it is perfect for him. Brett never came across like he was "being pastoral." He was always just being Brett. It was natural for him to be caring and nurturing. Brett was uncontroversial and knew what he stood for. I think these qualities made him stand out--they made him unique and attractive in every circle. I will never forget laughing with Brett. It was easy. In difficult times when we were both struggling Brett could find the humor. There have been only a handful of people I would talk with as freely as I could with Brett. He made people feel safe and cared for. You will be missed, brother. Our prayers will remain with your wonderful family.

Bret was such an amazing person! He had one of the most compassionate hearts I had ever encountered. Bret was my supervisor, but more than that, he poured into me on a daily basis. He was always willing to listen and give genuine godly council. I can not wait to see him again one day, I know he is now at peace in the presence of our Lord Jesus. My prayers go out to the family.
