Brian McEWEN Obituary

McEWEN, Brian

65, life-long resident of Tampa, former Director of Champions for Children, passed on March 25, 2018. Brian graduated from Jesuit High School, Vanderbilt University, and the University of South Florida where he received his PhD in Philosophy. To have known Brian was to have loved him. Every person was his friend. Below his ever-smiling face was the bow tie that was his trademark. He was the consummate casual individualist. His life was dedicated in service to the disadvantaged and the troubled segments of our lives. Prior to embarking on his career path, Brian detoured into music, performing in Chicago and New York City with close college friends in a group named Smooch. He served on many Boards of Directors serving the Tampa area. While battling a cruel and relentless cancer, he continued working to assure an orderly transition. Brian was the son of the late James "Red" McEwen and Louise Roberts McEwen. He is survived by his partner in marriage of thirty-seven years, Garland Wayne Mitchell; his brother, David (Gloria); nephews, Johnny, Stephen, and Jason; nieces, Julie, Jessica, Melissa and their families; cousins; and a multitude of grieving friends. Brothers, James and John; sister, Carol; and countless beloved dogs predeceased Brian. Brian's celebration of life will be held at 11 am, on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at The Portico, 1001 North Florida Avenue, Tampa, Florida 33602; casual attire is requested. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift of charity to Champions for Children or Portico.

An Old Soul gone too soon. I did not know of his passing. It pains me to write of it. His kindness and compassion will be deeply missed.

Brian will be deeply missed by me and all who knew him. His was an extraordinary life of service, kindness, honor, and love. Many who have lived longer have done far less, while the only thing greater than Brian's accomplishments was his humility. Goodbye, dear man.

I have known Brian for years. Especially when he was acting inThe plays at the Academy of the Holy Names. Which included my sister Katie Taylor. Brian had a wonderful sense of humor and was a talented smart man. He may be the reason I met my husband. It was after a night class at USF in 1979. It was raining. I had a choice of visiting Brian at the library or go see movie on campus. It was Superman 1. The rest is history
Brian, you will be missed but not forgotten.

Brian was the essence of kindness and generosity of spirit. Thoughtful, funny, loving. I never heard him say a mean word about anyone. He welcomed me into the family as his cousin's wife and included us in an unforgettable family picnic that brought together relatives who hadn't seen each other in years. Brian was all about connections, so in thanksgiving for his life, I'm going to focus on feeling the presence of his loving spirit, even across the great divide.
