Brian Wilkins Obituary

Brian Anthony Wilkins

55, passed away quietly in the familiar surroundings of his home of ten years. He was a 1976 graduate of Roncalli High School, where he was active in the marching band and played the saxophone. Brian enjoyed the challenges of working at his job and was retired from Rolls Royce after 31 years of service. He was preceded in death by his mother and is survived by his father, Donald Lee Wilkins and six siblings, Christopher Lee Wilkins (Christy Padgett), Patrick Michael Wilkins (Rita), Terry Joseph Wilkins (Dana), Donald Thomas Wilkins (Leigh), Julie Marie Zahn (Tim), and Jeffrey Louis Wilkins (Leslie). Visitation will be on Thursday, February 27, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. Rosary in Little and Sons Stop Eleven Chapel . Funeral Mass will be on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 10 a.m. in St. Jude Catholic Church, 5353 S. McFarland Rd. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Shocked and truly sorry to see this news this evening. Brian was a genuinely nice guy, with a quick smile and a helluva sense of humor. I run into him a few years ago and I was transported back to the old Holy Name and Roncalli days sharing a laugh and a few stories. My prayers go out to you Don, Terry and your entire family.

Too often we don't realize how much of a role someone plays in our lives until they are gone. My daughter saw Wilks' obituary sitting on my desk today. She never met Brian, but she commented that she remembered him from the many childhood stories I told. And there were many. As grade-school friends, we used to meet every Sunday at the Beech Grove Dairy Queen for a brazier burger. We used to go to the Holy Name convent on Saturdays to help with odd jobs Sister Damien needed done. We shared music, playing in the HN band and then at Roncalli. When we got our drivers licenses, we carpooled to high school. Later in our lives, there were many good times at the 19th Hole and when he'd come to Bloomington for the weekend. I could go on, but suffice it to say, Brian was a big part of my life growing up. Our paths had not crossed for many years, but today I miss him terribly. Peace to you, my friend.

I considered Brian a best friend at Holy Name from first to fifth grade, and we did a number of things together while I was at Holy Name and Roncalli. I met him one day after school in first grade when I had to stop to tie my shoe. I said “Hey, wait up,” and Brian actually stopped to wait for me. In early grade school years, we would spend recesses together with some other friends. As I recall, he was called “Smiley” by our friends, and Brian called me “mild mannered Marty.” Sorry to hear about his passing. I remember that he had a great sense of humor and was a good friend to others. God bless you and console you.
