BYRON BUTLER Obituary

Butler, Byron Haygood, Sr., 90, passed away September 12, 2012 in Gulf Shores. He was a lifelong resident of Montgomery. He was a World War II Navy veteran who served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He retired from the L&N railroad after 40 years of service in 1985. He was preceded in death by his wife Louise Butler. He is survived by five children, Gloria Butler (Larry) Smith of Huntsville, Ronald Alan (Sandra) Butler of Cumming, Georgia, Susan Butler (Steve) Bratton of Gulf Shores, Kay Butler (Randy) Nykamp of Huntsville and Byron H. (Bonnie) Butler of Cumming, Georgia. He is survived by eight grandchildren, six great- grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Visitation will be from 11 -12:00 on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home followed by a graveside service with Brother Larry Smith officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Calvary Chapel Fellowship of Foley at 1113 Suite A, North McKenzie St., Foley, AL 36535.

Am to sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad, Susan, and wish to extend to you and your family my deepest sympathy. You will be in my thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. As your father worked for the L&N railroad and my father worked as an engineer for the L&N railroad, I know they will both have a lot to talk about when they get together in Heaven. When my father, Byron Butler was recently interviewed back in April of this year by his Grandaughters, Tracy (14) & Carly Butler (11) for a video they were making regarding his participation in World War II....Tracy asked the question to her Grandfather "Why did you join the Navy instead of the Air Force".... To which my dad answered "BECAUSE I CAN SWIM A MIGHT BIT BETTER THAN I CAN FLY, THAT'S WHY"! The initial silence and subsequent laughter by all in the room was lost Tracy...he had to explain that he meant what he said. The man simply could not fly... but he was an excellent swimmer!
On a similar note, I called my Dad on June 6, 2011 and just to see if he was paying attention, I asked him "what were you doing exactly 67 years ago today?" Hoping to catch him off guard....he said without hesitation..."I'll tell ya what the hell we were doin'...I was on the USS NEVADA and we were shelling the Hell out of those damn Germans in Normandy France for the D-Day invasion...THAT's what I was doing!"
The man was a character and he never minced words. I will sincerely miss his commentary on life, and his ability to think he could solve all of the world's problems...usually through the use of Nuclear Weapons....if only he were in charge of things!
Dad, I know now you are truly at peace... I only hope they have a live broadcast of the Auburn Games and a nice Golf Course in Heaven...if they don't they will soon.

Gloria & Susan we are so sorry for your loss, but we know Mr. Butler is in a much better place. We think he was super special and our love goes out to all of your family. Our spunky little neighbor at Somerset will be sorely missed, but always in our hearts!

We just heard the sad news about your Dad's demise and hope you can take comfort in the fact that he is no longer in pain.

Although we only had a few chances to visit with him over these past several months, it was a pleasure and privilege to do so. He certainly led a full life and we are so glad we got to know him.

My entire family are sorry for your loss. I didn't know Uncle Byron very well, but what I did know of him was all good. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Like he said, he got his money's worth. What a great way to remember him.

Hello my family, I `m so sorry to hear about your dad.Of all the trips to Montgomery I only remember meeting Byron one time and that was 4 years ago at the condo, he was very kind even thou I was for AL.I hope the love in your heart for your dad will shine and the hurt for missing him will turn to all good memories.
