CALVIN HILSON Calvin Hilson, known throughout the community as the "Professor" for his ability to "reach one and teach one" as a youth mentor and Christian counselor, went home to be with Jesus March 30, 2016. He was 32. Calvin was born Nov. 30, 1983, in Southfield, Mich., to Deborah Teasley and Augustus Hilson. His childhood was spent in Michigan and Chicago, and in 2007 he relocated to Las Vegas in 2007 and worked for the North Las Vegas Police Department. He met his future wife, Dori, in 2010 and the two married in 2013. Together, they have six children. From 2010-2014, Calvin worked for the Las Vegas Urban League before joining Canyon Ridge Christian Church as an intern. He served during that time on the Gang Intervention Team at the Pearson Center in North Las Vegas, where he gained a stellar reputation as an advocate and mentor to young people. Calvin joined the staff of Canyon Ridge in 2015 as director of Care Experience. Calvin was a minister in training under the leadership of Pastor John Ayabina at Proceeding Word Church in Las Vegas. It was at PWC that he became passionate about ministry. Calvin was also an accomplished poet. He was known by everyone he met for his contagious kindness and sweet spirit. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jeffrey Hilson. He is survived by his grandmother, Elease Stanton; his parents, Deborah and Augustus; his beloved wife, Dori; his six children, Liam and Sofia Hilson, Cole and Lola Paige, Ri'Chard Green and Royce Finley; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Celebration of Calvin's life will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 8, at Canyon Ridge Christian Church, 6200 W. Lone Mountain Road. I am at a complete loss for words. Today, I visited the website of Alma College where Calvin and I attended. In looking at the upcoming events, it listed the Hilson Poetry Slam. However, as I read on I quickly learned this was to celebrate his life and legacy. Calvin was one of the influential figures in my life and time at Alma College. Calvin pushed me to excel, to speak up, and to let my voice be heard. Calvin was a big brother and a friend. We always had great conversations and good times together. I will remember Calvin's poetic voice and his candid demeanor. My love and prayers to his wife, Dori and their children.

Let the Works I've Done, Oh Lord, Speak for Me!- Calvin's love for family and friends was genuine. Each time I saw him, I was greeted by an effervescent smile that showed the love that words need not say. The last time I saw Calvin was at his wedding and he gave me the most beautiful picture of he and his wife as a gift. What a beautiful picture! My heart and prayers are with my family including his spouse, children, father and grandmother. God gave him to us for a little while on this earth and now he will forever be an angel to watch over all of us. Calvin, AKA The Professor, I never imagined that I would be writing sympathies

Inspired by your precious work, you were a part of my poetic epiphanies

I figured I'd have the chance to write with you instead of about you - and that will be a sorrowful regret

Your words were of great wisdom in which I will never forget

You delivered your words so eloquently when you would speak of your beautiful wife

You uplifted brokenness and gave hope and light to such a mundane life

You cherished your children; a very proud father

I'm grateful I had the chance to meet such an intriguing author

Poetry is a beautiful dying art

And the world is saddened by your void; a hole in every poetic heart

I know you had so much more to contribute and so many unspoken poems that I never got a chance to hear

And here you are having me create another poem even though you have disappeared

So even in your absence, you still create inspiration

The thought of even writing this is pure devastation
