Capt. Barnett Obituary

Capt. Stewart R. Barnett, III (Stew)(Stubby), U.S. Navy (ret'd) died on July 24, 2017 after a lengthy battle with Leukemia. Stew is survived by his wife of 42 years, Silvana Gemmellaro Barnett and his two children, Christian Stewart and Julia Anne (Rob). He is also survived by his parents, Stewart R. Barnett, Jr. and Joel Roy Barnett, and four sisters, Joel, Robin Robison (Mark), Nancy Marshall (Tom) and Melissa Elliott. Stew was a graduate of de la Salle High School (1967), Tulane University (1971), US Naval War College (1991) and Salve Regina University (1991).. Stew had a long and distinguished naval career, and was an active member of the VP and P-3 community, retiring in 2002 after 31 years of service. Stew also enjoyed a second career as a leader and mentor for a generation of Intelligence Officers at the Defense Intelligence Agency. Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. Monday; July, 31,2017 at ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CHURCH, 444 Metairie Road, followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Metairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org). A memorial service will be held in his honor in the Washington, DC area.
