Carl Zabel Obituary

Beloved Carl David Zabel, age 25, passed away on September 14, 2025. He was born to Ingrid and Mark Zabel, spending his first four years in Painted Post, NY and after that growing up and living in Ithaca, NY. He graduated from Ithaca College in 2022 with a major in philosophy.

Carl dove deeply into subjects and quickly became an expert, whether it was the history of boxing or the ancient Roman military, fish of the world, or extinct marine life. Two of his passions were D&D and competitive Super Smash Brothers. He became the top-ranked Smash player in New York’s Southern Tier and remained so for years. His enjoyment of the game translated to love for the Smash community, and his many friends valued him for his sportsmanship, friendliness, and welcoming nature. His D&D community loved the worlds and stories that grew out of his powerful imagination.

Carl loved nature and would often be out walking. When he went fishing with his father he was often more interested in observing and admiring the fish than catching them. He worked as an environmental educator at the Cayuga Nature Center’s summer camp, where he was patient, kind, and funny when working with the kids.

Carl sometimes had big feelings and wore them on his sleeve. This could be hard on him and others when he was upset. But more often he had a calmness about him, and he could be very perceptive about when other people were upset and needed care. He would drive out of the way to pick up a friend to go to a tournament, and he arrived early at events to help set up. He asked his mother to teach him how to make cinnamon buns so he could give them to one of his professors who was retiring.

His family loved him and believed in him. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister Rose Zabel, his grandparents Roald and Eva Hoffmann, uncle and aunt Hillel Hoffmann and Sharon Webber and their son Sam Webber, aunt Betty Caputo and her children Anna Caputo, Sarah Caputo, and Matthew Caputo, and a loving extended family.

The family is holding a private burial and will arrange a public memorial gathering at a future time.

I don't know what to say. I hadn't seen him since 2018, then this summer he came over and hung out with us for the last time. He was as nice as I remembered him to be. I missed him. I still miss him.

After speaking with Mark and reading the beautiful obituary, it seems to me that you raised a beautiful person who understood the importance of gesture, compassion, and the little things that often go overlooked.

I've known Mark for years, and I just found out that Carl had inspired him to fish. To see how happy that makes Mark, and to read about how in-tune Carl's connection with nature was, it's no surprise Mark loves it so much; he had an excellent teacher. It's an incredibly moving and beautiful gift a son can pass on to a father that I hope can bring some reprieve during this difficult time.

I'm sorry for your loss. It seems Carl touched the lives of many and left cherished memories with them. Something that can't be said for many.

My heart breaks for you, and I just hope you know that you raised a kind and loving human whose gifts and kind deeds will be remembered.

Dear Zabel family, I am so sorry for your loss. Carl's absence is a big hole in so many communities. I got to know Carl when he was my biology student. I appreciated his passion for learning and enjoyed watching him grow emotionally. I will always fondly remember Carl!

I knew Carl both as my student and as a camp counselor to my children. He was engaged, thoughtful and kind in both of these settings as I'm sure he was in other aspects of his life as well. What a loss for all of us that he is no longer with us. My thoughts are with all who knew and loved him.

Carl was an exemplary friend and community member. Knowing him at Ithaca College and in the local esports scene was a privilege - always kind and considerate, always looking out for what is best, and always checking in and saying hi. I will miss him, his presence, and our chats so, so deeply.
