Carol Smith Obituary

To meet Carol, even once, was to become her dance partner. She was genuinely interested in every person who knocked on, or came through her door…and if that didn't happen she would spot you through a window and shout "hello." Carol loved life, loved living, and lived to love others. Through nearly 10 decades (nearly 98 years till she passed on February 6), from the turmoil of the Great Depression through the Covid Pandemic, she brightened the lives of her loving family and countless friends, who knew her through time and across the miles. She caught the eye of Robert (Bob) Smith in the post WW II years when they worked together at a local theater. Married in 1949, they brought Carol Dawn (spouse: Richard), Rob (spouse: Shirley), and Donna (spouse: Mike) into the world, and built a loving home as they traveled with Bob's T.V. career on the East Coast and Mid-West. Bob and Carol delighted in entertaining friends and family and their personalities were a perfect blend of his engineering mind and her zest for living. Bob departed this life in 1997, and Mom continued on as the children had eight grandchildren (Ben, Michael, Laura, Meredith, Courtney, Bethany, Ryan, and Alex), followed by twelve great grandchildren, spread from Virginia to California. Carol's sister, Grace, survives her and lives in Pennsylvania. Carol loved cheese, Scrabble, dancing, singing, worshiping with her dear friends at Hickory Neck Episcopal Church and gardening. Now she is in Heaven, in the radiant presence of her Savior. Many would say that she was the brightest light they have known when it comes to personal friendship. And her children, grandchildren, and great grandkids (who know Carol as "Gigi") always loved to be with her. She was always the first to ask, "How are you doing?" She would be most pleased if you hugged your family members and smiled with your friends as you think about her now. Online condolences may be shared at www.nelsenwilliamsburg.com.

Carol didn't just love life, she absorbed it. Like we take in air every breath she took in life. She was always learning whether it was by reading books, which she did all the time, or just talking to people she met on a plane or in public gatherings. She never met a stranger. She had a real passion for exercise which led her to water aerobics at the rec center. She was my dear friend and I shall miss her immensely. I have heard that there are angels on earth but I never met one before I met Carol.
