Owens and Brumley Funeral Home - Burkburnett Obituary

Charles Edward McCullough of Burkburnett, Texas, age 79, passed away Thursday December 10th, 2020 in Wichita Falls, Texas following a brief illness.  Born April 1, 1941 in Grandfield Oklahoma to Robert Lynn and Hazel Marie (Bolton) McCullough, Charlie was the eldest of three children. Growing up on a farm outside Devol, Oklahoma, Charlie graduated from Big Pasture High School in 1958, attended college at Oklahoma State University followed by enlistment in the Army and National Guard Reserves.

Charlie married his wife Patty Nichols in 1962 and opened M&E soil service in 1964, where Charlie provided bulk fertilizer and fertilizer application services to local farmers in Southern Oklahoma and North Texas for over 33 years.  Charlie expanded his business to include trucking services for fertilizer and chemicals in the Mississippi Delta region and irrigation systems and installations.   In 1997, Charlie received a U.S. patent for a novel design of a piece of irrigation installation equipment, the McCullough Coverup, and began manufacturing Coverups in Burkburnett, Texas and sold them all over North America and internationally until selling the business in 2018 to focus on his ranching business.

Charlie served on the Board of Directors for the Burk Bank, the First State Bank of Keene, Itasca National Bank, and Keene Bancorp.   He volunteered and served on City Council of Burkburnett, Burkburnett Chamber of Commerce, Friends of the Library, Burkburnett Rotary Club, Board of Directors President of the Burkburnett Senior Center and was president of the Burkburnett Development Corporation.  Charlie was named Burkburnett Citizen of the Year in 2008.

Charlie was an avid pilot, owning several private planes over his lifetime and volunteered his pilot skills for Civil Air Patrol, including flying missions for the Drug Enforcement Agency, Oklahoma Forest Service, Texas Highway Patrol, and NASA, including searching for wreckage from Space Shuttle Columbia.

A member of the Church of Christ, Charlie is survived by his wife Patty, sons Charles "Chuck" McCullough and his wife Lisa of Cleburne, Steven McCullough and his wife Shellie of Bentonville Arkansas, grandsons Garrett McCullough and wife Kelsey of San Antonio, Tanner McCullough of Arlington, one granddaughter Maggie McCullough-Jones and husband David of San Diego, CA, numerous nieces and nephews, and one brother Hugh Lynn McCullough and wife Verdalee of Grandfield.  Charlie was preceded in death by his parents Bob and Hazel, his sister Marilyn Hoffman, and twin infant sons.

Not sure what to say?

I am so very sad to hear about Charlie's passing. He would come in and purchase parts from us at Purvis Ind. Exceptionally nice man. Very honored to have known him. My prayers are with your family. God Bless.

To the family, I knew Charlie only a few years, yet was inspired by his kindness, sense of humor, and dedication to various causes. Specifically, I knew him through Rotary and as a board member of the Burkburnett Senior Citizens Center, from which he relentlessly recruited me and others to join and help (it was an honor for all). He truly was always smiling and so genuine in his demeanor. Thinking about his smile, there was one time when he removed his dentures at a board meeting and...

STEVE, SHELLIE, PATTY, TANNER, I'M SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS.

Rest in Peace.

I'm deeply saddened by the loss of my friend, Charlie. His sense of humor and interaction with the early-morning coffee drinkers at McDonald's was priceless and a great beginning for every ones day. Even as I'm shedding tears for your great loss, I'm honored to remember one of the best persons I ever met. Our common Texoma connections strengthened/enhanced our relationship and friendship and story telling. My condolences to you, Patty, and your family.

My thoughts are with Patty and Charlie's family. While his obituary highlights the events of Charlie's life, it can't touch what Charlie was as a man. He was thoughtful, funny, and cared for the community. For years, he gave space in his building to the Burkburnett Friends of the Library for storage. Charlie was always available to help load and unload the books from the Book Sale, even using his own trailer and pickup to move the books. Charlie was a good man, in the best sense of the...

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. Lived by my aunt and uncle Pam and Phil Arrington and met him at senior citizens luncheons . He was a very nice man and was blessed to have what little time I had to know him.

Pam and I moved in our new home down the street from Charlie and Patty. That was in late 1986. We quickly got to know both of them and knew they were real friends. Charlie always had a smile and would help a person when in need. He volunteered his time and expertise in several different matters. He spent time helping me put down a new lawn and install a sprinkler system. Later I went with him helping others with new lawns. He never asked for anything in return, he was a great friend and...
