Charles Rice Obituary
Charles Rice
March 15, 1934 - August 28, 2025
Charles Caskie Rice, affectionately known as "Puffa," gained his angel wings on August 28, 2025, at the age of 91. He lived a full and meaningful life, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and unforgettable memories.
Charles was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and a friend to everyone he met. With a heart of gold and an ever-helpful spirit, he never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a hand.
He found great joy in the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. A lifelong fan of flat track motorcycle racing, he sponsored several racers over the years. Charles also loved traveling and bargain hunting at flea markets and yard sales, always in search of the best deal.
At just 12 years old, Charles began delivering newspapers for the Richmond News Paper. By 17, he joined the pressroom, where he earned the nickname "Puffa" on his very first day - a name that stuck with him for life. In May of 1992, he retired after more than 40 years of dedicated service.
Even in retirement, Charles stayed busy and active, often helping out at church, feeding the homeless, and lending his time and energy wherever it was needed. He was a longtime member of Hope Community Church, where he served faithfully for many years and built meaningful relationships within his church family.
He remained energetic and on-the-go until the COVID quarantine, which slowed him down and marked the beginning of his health decline. In February 2025, Charles was diagnosed with two forms of cancer. He fought bravely, but with his trademark honesty and strength, he accepted his journey and was at peace, ready to meet his maker.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, James and Grace Rice; brothers Howard "Grundy," James "Brother," and Billy; sister Helen "Sissy" Tignor; and beloved son-in-law Karl Riddle, Jr.
He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Broach Rice; children Rickey Rice, Cindy Singleton, Gwen Barker (Ricky), and Ann Riddle; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Amedisys Hospice for their compassionate care, with special thanks to his aide, Marquita, who made a meaningful difference in his final months.
Charles Rice lived with purpose, humor, and heart. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him - with one final, heartfelt "Make sure you behave yourself."
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Hope Community Church, 8391 Atlee Road, Mechanicsville, VA, 23116. Family and friends will be received from 1 to 2 p.m., with the service beginning at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hope Community Church in his memory.
