CHARLES SILBERMAN

I grew up in Mount Vernon, New York, in the late 1950s and early 1960s. By the time I was in high school, Mount Vernon was the center of one of the most bitter and ugly battles over school desegregation in the North. In 1968, while studying at Sarah Lawrence, I became involved in working with the pro-integration forces in my home town. And that was how I came to know Charles Silberman. I had the privilege of being around Charles and Arlene for about a year as a very part-time caretaker. I was honored to know these precious people. May God extend his comfort to their family.
