I grew up in Mount Vernon, New York, in the late 1950s and early 1960s. By the time I was in high school, Mount Vernon was the center of one of the most bitter and ugly battles over school desegregation in the North. In 1968, while studying at Sarah Lawrence, I became involved in working with the pro-integration forces in my home town. And that was how I came to know Charles Silberman. I was 21 and I guess he was twice my age. How lucky I was, at that important formative time of my life, to get a chance to spend a little time with a such an inspiring man, so concerned about civil rights and social justice. I was just a kid who didn't know much, but Charles was always kind, generous, and respectful. He was a "big name" but in no way acted self-important. Four decades later, our country still needs many more people like Charles Silberman. I send my very best to all those who loved him and who surely have suffered a terrible loss.

I had the privilege of being around Charles and Arlene for about a year as a very part-time caretaker. I was honored to know these precious people. May God extend his comfort to their family.
