Charles WILLIAMS Obituary

WILLIAMS, Charles Canaan Jr.

70, Temple Terrace, FL, died on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, from fatal injuries sustained when struck by another vehicle.

Charles was born on October 9, 1947, in Montgomery, AL, to Charles Williams Sr. and Marie Seawright. He was raised in Tuskegee, AL, attended Morehouse College in Altanta, GA, followed by medical school at the University of Pittsburgh. Charles had been a longtime resident of the Tampa Bay Area and worked as a thoracic oncologist at Moffitt Cancer Center since it opened in 1986. Charles was the first black medical resident at Tampa General Hospital, a mentor to many oncologists at Moffitt over the years, and always put his patients first. He was known to those close to him as loving a good joke and would respond with his signature wry smile or hearty laugh.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Simanteris Williams; daughters, Amanda and Sara Williams; his brother, Robert Williams; grandchildren, Yazin and Khayra Khan; many close friends, extended family, and numerous dogs, cats, and birds.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am, Saturday, April 7, at the City Pointe Church, 503 North Palmer St., Plant City. The family will receive visitors at the church prior to the service, from 10-11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Charles can be made to the Moffitt Cancer Center (Lung Cancer fund - clinical research) or to the Ahava Baptist Church.

I was just talking about Dr.
Williams today in a conversation with my rheumatologist in Panama City. He was my oncologist at Moffitt for nearly five years, and my rheumatologist had done a rotation under his guidance while in med school. We both had a great deal of respect for him.

As I said here last year in a post quoting another former student of Dr. Williams, he eased my pain. I shall always remember him fondly.

Dr. Williams became my Oncologist in 1995 when I was diagnosed with Lung Cancer. His gentle , caring nature together with his medical knowledge gave me the warm assurance that I could take one step at a time. In 1998 when my cancer spread....he was, once again, my medical strength. I believe I am here today because of him. When I saw him in January he smiled and nodded that he would see me in a year....his words were, "just keep doing what you're doing....You're doing good"... There are no words to describe how Blessed I feel to have had him as my Doctor. I am truly saddened by his passing and extend my deepest sympathy to his family.

I was heartbroken to hear of Dr. Williams' passing, as a former patient of his for nearly four years. With loving kindness, willingness to listen, wise advice, and a wry sense of humor, he did so much to help me and my family through a very difficult time.

I read of how he once told a fellow physician about their role in helping patients, saying it was not to ease their pain but to ease their suffering. Dr. Williams did an incalculable amount to ease my suffering.

My condolences to all his loved ones. Please know that he made a very big difference in my life and in this world.

Everything is put in God's own power under His control and authority but often times we don't understand why certain things happen the way they do, especially when it happens to good people. We can only trust Him and his plan for us. Still, it is difficult losing a loved one, a dear friend and even a colleague but there is comfort in His promises. My sincerest condolences to the Williams family. May you feel His presence, experience the comfort that He lovingly offers at this time, and enjoy the peace that He affords each one of us when we call and He comes to see about us.Enjoy you rest dear classmate...enjoy your rest.

To the family of Dr. Charles C. Williams: I have known Charles since I was 14 years old. He was super-smart and always kind. In the fifty-plus years that I have known him, I never heard anyone say anything bad about him. That is, indeed, very rare. It is very hard to even imagine what you are going through as a family. I know my words cannot ease your pain, but I hope the comfort of the Almighty can soothe your broken hearts. Try to remember his purpose-driven life, and lean on the grace of the Almighty to get you through this tragedy.

To the Williams Family,
I am a childhood friend of Charles's, from Tuskegee, Alabama. I remember him as being one of the hardest working students I ever knew. He was an intellectual inspiration to all who knew him. It was no surprise back then that he would Valedictorian of our high school class. My thoughts are with you.

My son was diagnosed in 1999 with stage four, non small cell lung cancer that was inoperable because it was so close to the Aorta. The Specialists here in Bradenton gave him nine months to live. He made up his mind to just wait to die. His three brothers and I finally convinced him to go to Moffitt and we met Dr. Wagner (Radiology) and Dr. Williams (Chemotherapy). Dr. Williams was such a caring person that my son made up his mind to undergo the treatment. Dr. Williams didn't sugar-coat the treatment and he explained thoroughly to us what to expect and he was there for my son every step of the way. Halfway through the treatment, the cancer had shrunk and at the end of the treatment, it was gone. My son always wanted to drive a semi and he asked Dr. Williams what he thought. He said he thought he should do whatever made him happy. My son went to school and went on to buy his own semi and was able to travel to every state and took me on trips out west and to every state on the east coast. My son passed away on June 6th, 2010 when the cancer went to his brain but he gave my son eleven years of happiness and I will be forever grateful to him for that. There is a special place in heaven for you Dr. Williams you were such a kind, gentle man and will be missed by all! Rest in peace.

Dr. Williams was my thoracic oncologist for almost 19 years. We had just discussed the day before he passed at my yearly check up that I was his longest term patient. I will miss him greatly. He was a wonderful doctor and a wonderful man. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
