Clarence Ellis Obituary

Clarence "Skip" Ellis, much-loved Professor of Computer Science at the University of Colorado, Boulder, died unexpectedly Saturday night, at age 71. He grew up in a poor part of Chicago as one of five children. Winning a scholarship to Beloit College in 1960 launched him on a lifelong passion for education. He graduated in 1964 with a BS degree, double major in Math and Physics, and then went to further schooling at the University of Illinois. His academic experience includes teaching at Stanford University, the University of Texas, MIT, Stevens Institute of Technology, and in Taiwan under an AFIPS overseas teaching fellowship. Skip is noted for being the first black man to earn a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1969, but he was so much more. During his college years, he met his first wife, Anna Yang, and together they had 2 children, Delilah and Damon. Anna passed away in 2001 and he later found love again with Lynn St. Pierre of Boulder. Skip and Lynn traveled the world for several years, visiting parts of India, Europe and Africa. In doing so fulfilled their passion for teaching in developing countries. Skip was an amazing human being who gave back on so many levels. He loved Africa, Ashesi University, international folk dancing, sweets of any kind (literally), his extended family and his students, many of whom became lifelong friends. Skips family will miss him dearly: Wife Lynn St. Pierre, Daughter Delilah, son in law Scott, granddaughter Hendrix, grandson Samuel, son Damon, son Josh and many in his extended family. A memorial service will be held at 4 pm Thursday May 22nd at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder, CO 80301. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to "Education Worldwide" or his beloved Ashesi University in Ghana (http://ashesi.org/)

I just found out yesterday that Skip is no more and can't believe it. He was a great mentor and friend to me during 8 years at CU Boulder (1994-2002). Not just a great scholar (a founder of workflow and BPM fields), but a truly remarkable man who was endowed with both deep wisdom and enormous humility. Such people are rare. I am fortunate to have know him and wish I could have spent more time with him. I will miss him very dearly.

Skip Ellis had a humility that belied his wisdom. Such a great role model! I wish every comfort to his wife and children, and may Skip and Anna's names be found in the Book of Life.

I was deeply saddened to hear about the news on Skip. Some people in life hope to make a difference, but Skip was one that did make a difference in many people lives. I was honored to work with him and know him. Rest in peace my brother.

I always felt so welcomed to the folk dancing groups when Skip was there. His spirit, his smile, his willingness to help everyone. I, like so many of you, am shocked and saddened by his passing. Yet, I know he is in a peaceful, beautiful place. My sincere condolences to his family.

This is a great loss. Skip was a remarkable person. He can be seen as the founder of the Workflow / BPM area. He always emphasized the human and social side of IT. I'm glad that I was able to work with him. My condolences for all of his friends and family.
