This is a beautifully written obituary and the words--their placement, choice, syntax--capture the spirit and sensitivity that Clay placed in his own work. I am a Trinity grad also, re-meeting Clay in 1995 at a Trinity reunion. I'm so sorry to hear about this. I was a fellow Deke at Trinity with Clay. He was a deeply thoughtful and sensitive man, deeply respected and loved by all. He'll be sorely missed by all who were hononed to have known him.

I was a former student of Clay's, and have not communicated with him since the 1970's. He was a young college grad teaching at Winchendon, and I was an indifferent english student, The short version of the story is that he made a big impact on my studies.
I live in SF, and wish I had gotten the chance to re-connect with him these last years. My prayers are with his family.

Although I only knew Clay for a relatively short time, I will always remember him. I respected him deeply and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this time.

Seeing that, and then seeing him through the disease over the next few months was a contrast. But he never lost his artists sensibility, his passion or his caring. It has been an honor knowing him for the time that I have.
Linda and Nell, thank you for being the guides to the journey for his last year. You made...

Linda and Nell: I was moved by the caring and love you manifested in your being with Clay during this last period of his life. I have many rich memories of the years I have known Clay and will remember him forever. Love -- Richard Clarke.
