Clay Debevoise Obituary

DEBEVOISE, Clay Clay Debevoise, artist and father, died on Easter Sunday (April 12, 2009) in West Hartford, where he was in hospice care after having ceased treatment for brain cancer diagnosed in May 2005. He was 54. Clay grew up on the East coast from D.C. to ME, and moved to San Francisco in 1997. He is survived by his two daughters as well as three siblings; his mother; his ex-wife and lifetime friend; and many other family members, close friends and colleagues. Clay was pre-deceased by his father. Clay's career as a photographer began in Vermont where he received an instamatic camera as a gift in 1963. His art evolved to include poetry, with his first poem inspired by JFK's death in 1965, and later the computer with the advent of the digital age. He graduated from Trinity College in Hartford with a BA in literature in 1975. After years in CT, Clay moved to New York City in 1989 to work with Warhol Studios and earned an MFA at the School of Visual Arts. His photography evolved to include computer-generated effects and text, and soon the photos evolved out of the art all together, leaving a creative and cutting-edge approach to words as imagery and vice versa. He drove across country in 1997 to relocate to San Francisco, meeting museum curators along the way who had expressed interest in his work. He lived in northern California until coming to hospice care in CT this April. On the West coast, he taught art and computer applications, developed a number of websites (including his own: www.clayd.com), and finalized an online photo/poetry book, Home. With world-class support from UCSF's neuro-oncology department, Clay fought his neuroglioblastoma nobly beyond the 3-6 month life expectation he was given in May 2005, while also tirelessly continuing his career and fatherhood of his younger daughter. He tired this winter and chose to stop treatment in January, leading to a graceful conclusion of his struggle.

This is a beautifully written obituary and the words--their placement, choice, syntax--capture the spirit and sensitivity that Clay placed in his own work. I am a Trinity grad also, re-meeting Clay in 1995 at a Trinity reunion. I bought several of his word works at this time and they continue to grace my life and my space each day--his work for me combined wit, cleverness, meaning, color and the triumph of the human spirit. Just what Clay strived for in his own life and ways of living. My heartfelt condolences go to Nell and her younger sister, to Linda and the many who were far closer to him than I. Nell, I met you once--mid nineties would have placed you in high school at that time--His deep love for you was in his every moment! I am sorry for this loss. Someone once said to me, "Despite my parents or because of them, I am destined to have a fascinating and meaningful life!" I found that a reassuring thought that asks us to celebrate the strengths and forgive the weaknesses! Something we all do as we step into our adulthood! So my heart is far away and certainly not central to your lives; but know, just the same, that it is with you and admires so much of what you have done and are doing now to make the world a peaceful place. Clay's progressivism surely contributed to all. with love, Robin Landy Amadon, Seattle, WA. [email protected]

I'm so sorry to hear about this. I was a fellow Deke at Trinity with Clay. He was a deeply thoughtful and sensitive man, deeply respected and loved by all. He'll be sorely missed by all who were hononed to have known him.

I was a former student of Clay's, and have not communicated with him since the 1970's. He was a young college grad teaching at Winchendon, and I was an indifferent english student, The short version of the story is that he made a big impact on my studies.

I live in SF, and wish I had gotten the chance to re-connect with him these last years. My prayers are with his family.

Although I only knew Clay for a relatively short time, I will always remember him. I respected him deeply and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this time.

Thinking about Clay at an art show, at a lovely winery in Healdsburg. He wore a white button down shirt, open collared and dramatic, every bit the enthusiastic artist. Seeing that, and then seeing him through the disease over the next few months was a contrast. But he never lost his artists sensibility, his passion or his caring. It has been an honor knowing him for the time that I have.
Linda and Nell, thank you for being the guides to the journey for his last year. You made things so much easier.

Though I am deeply saddened by Clay's death I am grateful that he was able to choose his time to die consciously, peacefully and with dignity thanks to Linda and family. My heart goes out to his loved ones.

Sorry to hear of the passing of dear Clay - an old family friend. I knew Clay mostly in California, but his family and mine go "way back" in Woodstock Vermont. What a sweet guy.

Linda and Nell -- I was sorry to read of your friend and father ... just wanted to let you know I was thinking of you both. He clearly had a very full and most interesting life.
